While not totally official, it looks like Captain America 3 and Thor 3 will be joining Ant-Man in Marvel Studios Phase Three.
Obviously it’s understood that Marvel has plans for their core franchises, so it comes as no surprise that we are hearing about the third installments in both the Captain America and Thor franchises. A trilogy is never a sure thing, and depending on your feelings towards the Iron Man sequels, sometimes one is enough. However, with a solid showing by Thor: The Dark World and the buzz surrounding Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we are excited to hear news of both franchises continuing.
While unconfirmed by Marvel at this time, it looks like Joe and Anthony Russo will be returning to helm Captain America 3. This news comes fairly early, considering that The Winter Soldier hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but if confirmed it would only prove that Marvel is pleased with the Russo’s work on Winter Soldier, which is good news for us, of course.
Shortly after that report surfaced, a confirmed statement from Marvel regarding the God of Thunder’s third film was released. Thor 3 will be written by Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, who have both worked with Marvel animation and in the comics for years. Kyle has been a producer on both previous Thor films, and Yost did some work on the script for Thor: The Dark World.
The credentials on these two more than satisfy, and it will be interesting to see where they plan to take the third film, especially considering some of Craig Kyle’s comments regarding Ragnarök (basically the Asgardian end of days) over this past year, not to mention the ramifications of the events of Dark World.
We can assume that the films will be a part of Marvel’s Phase Three, of which so far only Ant-Man has been officially scheduled. Doctor Strange has been announced, though without much follow up news. Marvel has set the date for two unannounced films – May 6th, 2016, and May 5th, 2017 – which could possibly be for Cap 3 and Thor 3.
While that is still quite a while away, let’s take a look at some newly released character posters for Captain America: The Winter Soldier to tide us over.
We may hear a few more rumblings about Phase Three in the next few months, but chances are they will be saving the big reveals for this year’s Comic-Con International. As always, we will keep you updated as the stories develop.
