Arthur Darvill may have proclaimed that his sci-fi days are gone, but the same cannot be said for Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, who this week joined the cast of Terminator: Genesis.
With apparently no regard for being typecast in another time travel story, Smith will portray an unspecified new character in the upcoming trilogy, with “a strong connection to John Connor.” This is said to be a major role which will expand in the second and third installments. Does Smith have ties to Skynet, and will he get any memorable lines like, “Come with me if you want to live”? Only time will tell.
Principal photography began more than a week ago on this film that initially struggled to get made. Arnold Schwarzenegger is confirmed to be playing the T-800, whose human tissue has aged, but unofficial plot points are rampant. There are rumors of the old cyborg protecting Sarah Connor at different points and events in history – including moments that were depicted in previous Terminator installments (a la Back to the Future, Part II).
That fits in with another rumor that suggests the film will take place during different times: the future, The Terminator’s 1984, and Terminator 2’s ambiguous ’90s setting. It’s possible that this version will have a story that runs concurrently with what already exists in the Terminator universe, but without creating an entirely different timeline. Alan Taylor directs, and theories suggest he will find ways to directly connect his new flick with James Cameron’s original.
HitFix says that it’s in an unspecified time that we meet Matt Smith’s character, and where it becomes clear what that “strong connection” actually is. They also tease that while his part (at least in this first installation) isn’t huge, it is pivotal. The three new films will reportedly shoot back-to-back (to back).
The Terminator franchise launched in 1984 and has earned more than $1 billion at the box office worldwide. This reboot is the fifth movie in a franchise that also included a TV show, and also stars geek-friendly actors Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as John Connor (previously played by Edward Furlong, Nick Stahl, Thomas Dekker, and Christian Bale); Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor (previously Linda Hamilton and Lena Heady); Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese (previously Michael Biehn and Anton Yelchin); Dayo Okeniyi as Danny Dyson (previously DeVaughn Nixon); and Schwarzenegger as the title cyborg who can’t be bargained with, can’t be reasoned with, doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
The film opens worldwide on July 1, 2015.
