Fans of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show have news to smile about.
The new trailer for Dreamworks animated feature Mr. Peabody & Sherman gives us a peek into the adventures of the world’s smartest time travelling dog and his adopted son Sherman.
The trailer is a mishmash of exaggerated portrayals of historical figures like Leonardo Da Vinci and Sigmund Freud. Time travelling tropes are aplenty as “We must rewrite history in order TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE!” and “Somebody’s ripped a hole in the space time continuum!” How can you lose when you throw in old school puns straight from the mouth of a smug, sarcastic talking dog?
Walt Disney Feature Animation veteran and Director Rob Minkoff (The Lion King, Stuart Little) knows his way around an Animated feature. Voice actors Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Mel Brooks, Stanley Tucci, and Stephan Colbert lend their considerable talents to the production.
Based on Peabody’s Improbable History segments from the 1960s animated television series The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show the new feature does a fine job of capturing the tone of the original series while updating it at the same time.
Historically studios have not had much luck with big screen versions of segments from this series. In 1999 Dudley Do-Right bombed making only 9 million against a budget of 70 million. The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000) also bombed making only 35 of its 76 million dollar budget back in the box office. Perhaps Mr. Peabody and Sherman will find its audience.
Mr. Peabody and Sherman opens March 7, 2014.
