Muppets Most Wanted Trailers Hilariously Mock Twitter

In typical Muppet style, the latest ad campaign for the upcoming film pokes fun at other movies for using Twitter posts to simulate popularity.

Like everything else on the internet, once the mainstream media learned how to use Twitter they’ve been abusing it to no end. A rash of recent movie trailers have taken the fad to an extreme by using Twitter posts of questionable authenticity to simulate popularity. The Muppets, being no strangers to parody, have turned the trend on its head with their new teasers for Muppets Most Wanted.

Citing fake Twitter handles like @WockaWocka23 and @KermitRules17, the clips list tweets anticipating the movie in mock internet-speech. It’s a clever idea. Not only is it a suitable gag that fits the film’s sense of humor, it allows the ads to pepper in brief celebrity appearances without giving away too many surprises.

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

2011′s The Muppets showed the world that there’s still a place for Jim Henson’s affable puppets in today’s hyper-cynical, self-aware society. It will be hard for the sequel to maintain the swell of nostalgia and sincerity that the last movie drummed up, and without Jason Segel and Amy Adams to infuse the sequel with a touch of humanity it’ll be interesting to see just how the new movie will do. It certainly isn’t lacking for star power: From these trailers alone, you can spot Zach Galafianakis and Tom Hiddleston in addition to the above-mentioned heavy hitters Tina Fey and Ricky Gervais. No doubt there are plenty of surprise cameos to come.

Muppets Most Wanted comes out March 21st, 2014.
