The popular myth-busting science show announced that it is getting rid of co-hosts Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara.
Mythbusters debuted in 2003 on the Discovery Channel with hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage. Behind-the-scenes team members Byron, Belleci, and Imahara, also known as the M7 Build Team, were put in front of the camera during the show’s second season as co-hosts. But after 10 years of countless experiments, explosions and busted myths, the show has decided to move in a different direction.
Hyneman and Savage caught fans off guard when they announced at the end of the show’s season finale on Thursday, August 21 that the trio of mythbusters is leaving the show. Savage states, “It’s not only the end of this episode. It’s not only the end of the season. It is also the end of an era. This was the very last episode of Mythbusters to feature the incredible trio of Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara.”
As Nerdist points out, Savage mentioned in the past that the 2015 season would be a reboot for the series. But fans of the show were completely blindsided to learn that this reboot also includes a cast shake-up.
“This next season we’re going back to our origins with just Adam and me,” explains Hyneman. Savage praises the trio, stating, “You’ve given literally your blood, sweat, and tears in the name of science, and it has been a total pleasure, not only to work with you, but to call you our friends.”
The reason for this change in the show in unclear. But fans were quick to voice support for the M7 Build Team on social media. Byron posted several messages to Twitter in response to the news, including the following Tweet:
I am sad for an ending but there will be exciting new adventures for us.
— Kari Byron (@KariByron) August 22, 2014
Belleci and Imahara posted similar messages. And, although it is unclear what new adventures await the trio, they will most likely involve science. All three of these mythbusters have taken active roles in helping to increase awareness and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and careers.
The Mythbusters website currently features a retrospective of Byron, Belleci, and Imahara to pay tribute to the team’s 10 years of myth-busting awesomeness.
