When you think of Edgar Allan Poe, several things comes to mind. Engaging poet, chilling words, literary genius are just a few that best describe the legend.
We can now add basis for a Kickstarter campaign to the resume. Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon has gotten together with his acting cohort in crime Jeffrey Combs, along with long collaborator and screenwriter Dennis Paoli, to put together a brand new feature film called Nevermore.
The film will star Jeffrey Combs in the role of Edgar Allan Poe in Nevermore, a role he masterfully played in the stage play of the same name and in a Masters of Horror episode years ago. Combs achieved critical acclaim of his portrayal of the enigmatic and haunted Poe as he toured throughout the country with the stage production. The film will be an adaptation of the stage play and the vast majority of the words and story will come from the words that Poe put on the page in his letters and essays. While Poe has been at least referenced in several movies or television shows (The Raven with John Cusack and The Following) recently, the creative team aims to dive a bit further into the mind of the writer, digging deeper with observations and reports from his readings and experiences more than a century ago.
Of course, this is where Kickstarter comes in. The team is looking for $375,000 to help fund this feature. The money will be going to the production of costumes and sets to bring the environment to the appropriate period. There will also be practical and CGI effects that will be realize this movie and help it reach its full potential. As the film will help dramatize some of his most famous works, “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” to name a few, the filmmakers are focused on making sure this film looks and plays great as it showcases one of the best, and most mysterious writers of American literature.
In backing the project, some of the giveaways range from signed postcards and a thank you on the website, to getting an executive producer credit and a featured extra role in the movie itself. Of course, other giveaways are sure to include a signed From Beyond or Re-Animator poster so this could be your opportunity to be a part of this Kickstarter campaign. And of course bragging rights that you helped work with the creative team from the Re-Animator will get anyone the proper street cred they deserve.
