Avengers Infinity War

We’ve been seeing a few shots from the Russo Bros. set of Avengers: Infinity War, the first film of the finale to the first era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sounds dramatic, but this is the culmination of over 20 films and the work of some of the most talented Hollywood has to offer, and it’s clear Marvel Studios aren’t pulling any punches.

We’ve seen a few set photos so far, most recently with our first look at Iron man’s new armor for Infinity War, as well as teases of a number of different characters from the various films interacting, like this most recent set of photos. The first batch shows Paul Rudd as an out of costume Scott Lang running from something:

The next set of photos includes a bit of a SPOILER WARNING. In the photos, we can see Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange filming a scene with a mo-cap actor, which you can see in the tweet below:

On closer inspection of the photos, a nametag on the suit reads “EB-MAW,” which seems to confirm a long-rumored addition to the cast, Ebony Maw.

Ebony Maw has been rumored for the film since it was first announced that Terry Notary was working on the film. Notary was the titular King in Kong: Skull Island, and revealed some interesting details about his role in Infinity War:

“I’m working on four characters right now. I’m working with Josh Brolin and three other actors, and I’m playing Josh Brolin’s right-hand bad guy in the film. I can’t say the name of the character or I think Marvel will sever my head, but I apply those same principals of what it means to drop bullshit and just play a character truly evil. And it’s working. [Laughs] It’s truly working.”

Notary (who IMDB lists as playing Cul Obsidian) and the other three actors were believed to be the Black Order, Thanos’ War Generals who first appeared in Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity comic event. The Order is led by the ruthless Corvus Glaive, along with Proxima Midnight, Supergiant, Ebony Maw, and Black Dwarf (though he is exiled from the Order early on in Infinity).

L-R: Supergiant, Black Dwarf, Corvus Glaive, Thanos, Proxima Midnight, and Ebony Maw.

In the Infinity storyline, Ebony Maw was actually responsible for dealing with Doctor Strange and managed to control the Sorcerer Supreme through his powers of persuasion. We can imagine their encounter in Infinity War will be based more on the Time Stone that Dr. Strange holds within the Eye of Agamotto, but just seeing the two characters together is a nice nod to the storyline that first introduced Ebony Maw and the Black Order.

We’ll be watching the set of Avengers: Infinity War closely, so keep it locked to GEEK for all the latest news and updates on the MCU’s biggest film yet!
