Rob Letterman’s upcoming Detective Pikachu movie starring Ryan Reynolds has just added a pair of new cast members. The first live-action Pokémon movie, which is set to start shooting soon in London, has added actors Bill Nighy and Chris Geere (You’re the Worst) to its lineup, adding to the recent news that Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), and Kathryn Newton would also be co-starring in the film. As of now, Detective Pikachu will be released on May 10th, 2019.
Bill Nighy is one of Britain’s best actors, and that’s saying something. Having appeared in nearly 140 movies and TV shows, Nighy’s most memorable roles in everything from Shaun of the Dead to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest have made him a go-to character actor in every genre. As for Chris Geere, his star-making performance on FX’s You’re the Worst will hopefully lead to a successful film career after the show’s fifth and final season airs this year. Geere is also starring in the upcoming horror-comedy Deadtectives, which is set for a release sometime this year.
According to a synopsis of the film:
The game follows a peculiar talking Pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.
Additionally, a local Londoner recently posted some set images on Twitter, including a look at the Ryme City Police Plaza.
