Fans have been waiting patiently for more news on the upcoming Captain Marvel, which had a big showing at this year’s SDCC. Not only were our first looks at concept art for Brie Larson in costume revealed, but our first details of the story began to trickle out, including the 90s setting, as well as the use of elements of the “Kree/Skrull War” storyline as the basis for the film.
The last news we heard was that Samuel L. Jackson would be reprising his role as Nick Fury for the film, and rumors that Rogue One baddie Ben Mendelsohn might be up for the role of the villain, though details on the rest of the supporting cast were being kept quiet. Thankfully, the latest news from the production has revealed not only another high profile actor has signed on, but they will be playing a very important character in the Marvel universe.
Jude Law has joined the cast and will be playing Dr. Walter Lawson AKA Mar-Vell, a Kree alien who “becomes a mentor of sorts to Danvers as she tries to figure out her new powers,” as reported by Variety. In the comics, Mar-Vell was the original Captain Marvel, and it was his alien DNA that mixed with Carol Danvers, which after exposure to the device known as the Psyche-Magnitron, gave Carol her powers and led to her becoming Ms. Marvel before she took on the role of Captain Marvel herself.
While we likely won’t see Mar-Vell appear as the iconic Captain Marvel in the film, the inclusion of the Kree character alludes to both Carol’s MCU origins, as well as the development of the “Kree/Skrull War” storyline. While Mendelsohn’s role remains unconfirmed, it’s likely he will portray one of the shape-changing Skrulls as they make their debut in the Marvel Universe. Mar-Vell not only left a lasting impression on the heroes of the Marvel Universe, his death from cancer in Marvel’s first graphic novel – The Death of Captain Marvel – is fondly remembered by fans. We’ll have to wait and see if his comic fate will be represented on the big screen as well.
Jude Law will be seen next as a young Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which recently revealed the first look at the character in a huge cast photo. As for what he might look like in Captain Marvel, BossLogic dropped a possible glimpse at that on Twitter:
