One of the most hotly anticipated video games slated for release this year is the upcoming PS4 exclusive Spider-Man. Since the game was first revealed during Sony’s 2016 E3 press conference fans of the web-slinging wall-crawler have been looking forward to it, and not without good reason. The upcoming game from developer Insomniac Games looks promising based on the gameplay trailer shown during E3 2017. Fans now have a new reason to be excited about the game as it will feature both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Though we’ve known Morales would be appearing in the game, it was unclear how large of a role he’d have.
Thanks to a new interview with Bryan Intihar, the creative director behind the title, we now know that Morales will actually play a pretty sizeable role in the narrative. That wasn’t always the case though, Intihar explains to GamesTM that,
“Miles didn’t start out with as big of a role as he has now, but as we started doing more research on the character, I went back and just started reading more and more and more. I’ll be honest, I just fell in love with the character. Just like MJ can provide a different perspective on the world, I thought Miles and his relationship to Peter brings something different. Miles is younger than Peter, and what they experience, and how they get into each other’s lives is pretty unique. I said off the bat that we wanted to make a unique Spider-Man universe, one that obviously takes cues from the comics and movies, but also does something unique and different…I’m pretty excited about him and where we take him. It’s going to be something. It’s going to surprise people.”
Interestingly, Insomniac Games still hasn’t explicitly revealed whether or not we’ll actually get to play as Miles, but considering that they have confirmed that we’ll play brief sequences as MJ it would be an odd choice if the other actual web-slinger in the city wasn’t playable. That said, in an interview with Playstation Access, Insomniac Games’ James Stevenson did reiterate that the game is very much Peter’s story and Miles just plays a part in it. You can see that interview below, where Stevenson also teases some of the villains we’ll encounter in the game.
All things considered, it appears that Insomniac Games is really dedicated to delivering a unique experience with their upcoming Spider-Man game. If the thought of swinging through an open world version of Manhattan as Spider-Man wasn’t enough to entice anticipation, the time and attention they are devoting to the narrative of the game should.
