Ruben Fleischer’s Venom – starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock – is currently in production with Sony, which owns the rights to both Venom and Spider-Man. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was the result of a huge collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios, but there are rumors that Sony will be borrowing the MCU’s Spidey for Fleischer’s film. The two characters kind of function as two halves of a greater whole. Of all the hero/nemesis relationships in comic books, the one between Peter and Eddie is fairly close compared to others.
Rights issues aside, it doesn’t make sense for there to be a Venom movie without an appearance by Spider-Man. At the very least, if the film makes a point of mentioning the character in an interesting way, that might be enough. But getting Tom Holland involved would be an ideal situation, even if the news is only a rumor right now. Despite a press junket from 2017, in which Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal establish the MCU’s Spider-Man as being independent of the Venom universe, a source close to Venom‘s production says that Tom Holland will be appearing in the film.
On Collider’s Movie Talk, filmmaker and artist Jon Schnepp spilled the beans about Holland’s supposed cameo:
“Spider-Man is going to be in Venom. For the last couple of months, we’ve been hearing how Sony is keeping it all separated, and Spider-Man is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but every other character that’s in the Spider-Man universe is separate. All I’m saying is that Spider-Man—and I’m talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man—is going to be in Venom.”
Schnepp is speaking pretty confidently with almost no concrete evidence, so there’s a good chance the claims are completely false, but the idea of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in an R-rated Venom movie is an exciting one. I doubt Marvel and Disney would want to put one of their most wholesome heroes in an ultraviolent, antihero origin story, but in the age of Logan, it seems like anything is possible. Even if Holland were to appear for a few brief moments, it’d be a pretty legendary turn of events.
IGN recently released the first official image of Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. The image shows Brock holding a journal, presumably doing some kind of research or work for his job as a reporter. Besides that, it’s not a particularly revealing image, but the production is moving along, and we’re just a few short months away from seeing Tom Hardy’s Venom on the big screen.
Venom hits theaters on October 5th, 2018.
