Today, on things we didn’t think we needed but now won’t be able to live without – Deadpool is getting an animated series on FXX! The news was reported earlier by Marvel Television and FXX, who previously collaborated to great success with Noah Hawley’s Legion series (check out our reviews of the first season). The animated series has a strong team on board as showrunners, executive producers, and writers with Donald Glover and Stephen Glover, who brought us their fantastic Atlanta series on FXX.

It seems like the success of Fox’s R-rated Deadpool is not only opening new doors for superhero films but also animated series on the small screen. Adult themed animation is of course nothing new, but knowing how the Glover’s unique take on storytelling that made Atlanta such a great watch, not to mention Glover’s own brand of comedy – the comedian/actor/rapper has a proven track record in hilarity – makes this new series one to watch.

Donald Glover on FXX’s Atlanta

Glover might be more well known to fans of Community as Troy, or as music star Childish Gambino, and readers of the site know that Glover will be hitting the big screen in the still untitled Han Solo spinoff as Lando Calrissian. He also served as the partial inspiration for the creation of Ultimate Spider-Man Miles Morales, after Glover’s campaign for the role of Peter Parker prior to the first reboot at Sony with Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield. He then went on to voice the character of Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on DisneyXD, proving he’s no stranger to the world of comic books.

FX Networks and FX Productions Co-President of Original Programming Nick Grad:

“Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta. With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”

Marvel Television’s Jeph Loeb, who will be serving as executive producer along with Jim Chory, seems to be as excited as we are for this new series:

“How much more fun could this be?  Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth!  We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”

Deadpool in Hulk Vs. Wolverine

Deadpool has been blowing up in popularity since his creation in 1991 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, and has appeared in animated form a few times before. He featured in one of the two Hulk Vs. animated stories from Marvel Animation, voiced by Nolan North (who also voiced the character for the Deadpool video game). Deadpool also appeared on the aforementioned Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, voiced by Will Friedle (who will always be Batman Beyond‘s Terry McGinnis to us).  This will, of course, be the first time that Deadpool will be free to be himself thanks to FXX and it’s adult-aimed programming.
