The new look of each regeneration of The Doctor is a long-standing tradition when the new incarnation embraces the fresh aspects of The Doctor’s ever-evolving personality. The BBC revealed the new look for Doctor number 13, to be played by Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch), via Twitter this week:

The new look is familiar and different all at once. A long coat, the likes of which we’ve seen on David Tennant’s 10th Doctor and Peter Capaldi’s 12th. Some snappy yellow suspenders are reminiscent of those most recently worn by 11th Doctor, Matt Smith. It is new, fresh, but still, very much the ensemble of a Doctor. A bit of a hodgepodge fashionwise, the outfit is fun and functional, perfect for chasing down baddies and rescuing companions, with shin length pants and well-worn boots. Cosplayers have no doubt set out on the hunt for the perfect blue trousers, while fan artists have already been putting their own loving touch on 13 in their art.

The new look conveys a degree of whimsy something that has been missing from the character with Capaldi’s serious, albeit captivating portrayal. Could this be a sign that new show-runner Chris Chibnall and the new cast will bring some laughs back to the TARDIS? One can only hope.
The Doctor’s fashion sense can change a bit throughout their reign. The 11th Doctor is best known for his bow tie, but he did try out a stetson, while Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor is all about the scarf, which this 13th Doctor’s graphic tee subtly homages. Fans can easily give a nod to their own favorite Doctor with a bit of celery in their jacket, or a pin in the shape of a question mark, but we wonder what aspect of the new look will become forever associated with the 13th Doctor? There isn’t a lot about the new outfit that is terribly memorable, so it is hard to say. Could it be her short pants, or will she have a more distinctive version of the sonic screwdriver? We sincerely hope it isn’t a pair of sunglasses.
In addition to a new look and a new sonic, fans are wondering about the TARDIS. She’s changed her own look before, with each new Doctor reflected in the details. Many questions will be answered, and likely many new ones will arise when the sonic is passed from 12 to 13 in the hour-long Christmas Special, December 25th. The new season will feature series regulars and the Doctor’s new companions, Bradley Walsh as Graham, Tosin Cole as Ryan, and Mandip Gill as Yasmin.
