Fox just shuffled the release dates for some of their biggest planned movie releases, seemingly to accommodate the addition of two untitled Marvel projects. Alien: Covenant, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, is now slated to hit theaters in May 19, 2017 instead of in August later that year. Additionally, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has been pushed back from June 16, 2017 and is now eying an October 6, 2017 release. The added Marvel films have been set to arrive on November 2, 2018 and February 14, 2019.

There is also a third, previously announced untitled Fox/Marvel film set to open on March 2, 2018. Two of the three dates are undoubtedly for the follow-up films to Deadpool. Fox wants to capitalize on one of the year’s biggest movies making the likeliest scenario for Deadpool 2 to take the March 2 spot. After all, the middle of November in the thick of the holiday season probably isn’t the best place for the “merc with a mouth” to make his return. The Thanksgiving commercials would be brilliant though.

Deadpool 2

Deadpool being the smash hit that it was already has a third movie in the works, and is thought to morph into a fully fledged X-Force adventure. The February 14, 2019 date makes the most sense for this Deadpool 3/X-Force film. It will be interesting to see if that’s the case as that will mean that Fox will really have to crank it out in order to release the third movie less than a year after Deadpool 2.

A dark horse candidate for that date would be the Gambit film if that is ever resurrected. Prior to all of the trouble surrounding the Gambit project, the plan seemed to be that it would occupy that October 6 date that Kingsman: The Golden Circle is now in. The film is all but stalled as it is undergoing script rewrites and no longer has a director attached. That said, February 14, 2019 is far enough off in the future that if Fox gets everything sorted out with the script and finds someone to helm the production it could settle in there.

Gambit

As for the November 2, 2018 date, the New Mutants project that Josh Boone is writing and directing makes the most sense. The property is a young adult spin-off of the X-Men franchise. So long as they start shooting around late Spring, early Summer of 2017 they should be able to hit that date. Not to mention that as a young adult property it will be more family friendly than the Deadpool films making a November launch a good fit.

Both Deadpool and the New Mutants should reinvigorate the X-Men universe that is seeing a lot of doors closing. Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine for the last time in next year’s Logan, and X-Men: Apocalypse saw the contracts of James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender all expire. Not to mention Bryan Singer has said he plans on moving onto other projects as well.

New Mutants

So, our best guess is it plays out as such;

  • 5/19/17 – Alien: Covenant
  • 10/6/17 – Kingsman: The Golden Circle
  • 3/2/18 – Deadpool 2
  • 11/2/18 – New Mutants
  • 2/14/19 – Deadpool 3/X-Force or Gambit

The next couple of years should be really fun and really interesting as far as the Fox/Marvel properties are concerned. Be sure to keep it here for updates as we have them and as always, let us know what you think in the comments section below!

The kind of Geek that has several shelves on my book case dedicated to Star Wars novels. Star Wars is essentially a way of life for me. Other things are cool too. Generally a big fan/critic of movies, I try to go to the theater once a week. There's a lot of great TV out there too, chances are if I can, I'll write about the stuff I love. I dig the Marvel and D.C. universes so far...except Suicide Squad...that was a disappointment. I love a lot of music but I gravitate to alternative and punk. The Libertines are my absolute favorite.
