We know there’s that huge holiday coming up in a few days, full of gifts and cheer. But when that’s over, the holiday that’s basically a second Christmas for comics fans – Free Comic Book Day – is only a few months away. Saturday, May 5th, 2018, is the next FCBD, and Diamond has announced the 50 – 50!!! – free books that will be available at your participating local comic book retailer.

Free Comic Book Day is always the first Saturday in May. Our picks for what’s exciting us the most follow, and the full list is below that. But it’s important to remember that not all participating stores order all the titles. If there’s a book or books you are especially interested in, you should call or contact your local comic shop and ask which titles they intend to carry. Also important to note: while the books are free to you, they are not 100% free to your local store; they still pay shipping on the books and have to find space on their shelves and pay employees to organize, promote, and hand out the books, etc. Which is just to say that if you intend to take advantage of the free books, you should very strongly consider saving up your Tooth Fairy funds and buy a comic or graphic novel or three as well. To find the shop closest to you that are participating, check out this handy-dandy locator.

Our Most Anticipated

(1) Bongo Comics: Free-For-All 2018

This title featuring the Simpsons characters is always funny, high-quality, and a perennial favorite.

(2) Strangers In Paradise XXV #1

We’re huge fans of SiP and Terry Moore, and this issue celebrates the 25th anniversary of Francine, Katchoo and company.

(3) My Hero Academia & Rwby

We can’t get enough My Hero Academia, a manga twist on the ol’ “world of superheroes + high school drama.”

(4) DC Comics’ Top Secret Gold Book

Okay, sorry, we’re falling for the hype: a top-secret book? Color us curious. DC has in the past wowed us on FCBD, and our expectations are probably unreasonably high.

(5) Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Special

Adventure Time is our jam, and Fionna & Cake — the gender-bent, alternate versions of Finn & Jake, perhaps constructed from the imagination of the Ice King — are some of our favorite side characters.

(6) Starburns Presents #1

Fans of Rick & Morty and Community know what Starburns is – writer Dan Harmon’s production company. Looks like they are getting into the highly lucrative comics game. This issue is written by comedian/actor Patton Oswalt, as well as Harmon and Eric Esquivel, with art by Troy Nixey. Description: “… will feature Patton Oswalt’s contribution to the upcoming Comic’s Comics Anthology and an excerpt from Gregory Graves #1, written by Dan Harmon and Eric Esquivel. Worlds collide as comics and comedians join forces to tell epic and hilarious stories of fantasy, heroes, villains and more!”
