With Kong: Skull Island taking its worldwide box office bow three weeks ago, it would appear that Legendary’s Monster-verse is in full swing. After locking in Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat director Michael Dougherty, the forthcoming Godzilla: King of Monsters continues to produce an impressive cast of stars. Among them is Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, and Millie Bobby Brown. So far there have been no returning characters from the first Godzilla entry set to appear – until now.
According to Variety, the only returning star will be Ken Watanabe, reprising his role as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa. This update comes along with the news that Straight Outta Compton star O’Shea Jackson Jr. is also in talks to star in the monster fest. Although it’s always a good sign to see a solid ensemble cast assembled for a big budget action/sci-fi movie, geeks everywhere are mostly interested in seeing Godzilla again, and for a longer time in this latest installment. We also can’t wait to see which monsters he’ll be facing down to own the “King of Monsters” title. This is all of course just a warm for ‘Zilla before he takes on the current champ of Skull Island; King Kong. The monster match-up between the two most iconic beasts in film history will be the most anticipated movie fight since Batman V Superman disappointed crowds of moviegoers worldwide.
Most recently a writer’s room had been set up for the upcoming ultimate confrontation between the two rebooted beasts. The writer’s room features Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean), Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond), T.S. Nowlin (The Maze Runner), Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicles), Cat Vasko (Queen of the Air) and comics and TV veteran J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Sense8).
Godzilla: King of Monsters is set for release in 2019, followed up by Godzilla vs. Kong (tentatively) in 2020.
