It’s not that often we see big rumors for a film pan out officially, especially with the sheer amount of secrecy and speculation that goes into the Star Wars saga. Today we are very happy to report that one of those rumors has become fact – Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in Han Solo: A Star Wars Story.
The news broke on Twitter today as Lucasfilm announced that Glover will take on the iconic role of the slickest scoundrel in the Star Wars universe years before we first meet him in Empire Strikes Back, played by Billy Dee Williams.

Glover has most recently appeared in Ridley Scott’s The Martian as well as starring in his own show on FX, Atlanta. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller commented on the casting of Glover:
We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us. These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.
The press release reveals a bit more about Lando’s role in the spin-off, which also stars Alden Ehrenreich as the titular scruffy-looking nerf-herder:
“…this new film depicts Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.”
Fans of Glover, whether it’s from his time as Troy on Community or even his music career under the name Childish Gambino, should be excited to see him take on what could arguably be the biggest role of his career yet. No pressure.
What do you think of his casting as Lando? Are you excited for Han Solo or should they be leaving the character’s origins well enough alone? Let us know in the comments section below!
