The creator of Luther is back with Hard Sun. BBC One and Hulu just released the first trailer for their six-part “pre-apocalyptic” crime drama from Neil Cross. The series will launch first on the British pubcaster on January 6, 2018, before debuting in the US via the streaming service on March 7.

Jim Sturgess and Agyness Deyn play detectives Robert Hicks and Elaine Renko, partners and enemies, who seek to enforce the law and protect their loved ones in a world that every day slips closer to a world-ending natural disaster. Hicks is a family man and a great, committed officer. He’s also profoundly corrupt. Renko is a difficult and damaged, but utterly incorruptible officer. Thus, the two cops stand on different ends of the social and moral spectrum and also seriously distrust one other – and for good reason. But they must somehow learn to work together if they’re going to survive until the end of the world.

The trailer teases just how intense this series could get, and coming from the creator of Luther that’s easy to comprehend. Not only do these two have to deal with their own, messed-up lives, but have to deal with the knowledge that the end is coming. With both Deyn and Sturgess attached, this is a show to keep an eye on come the new year.

Speaking of Neil Cross recently struck a first-look deal that allowed him to make a cop show, unlike other cop dramas. “We had a blast making it. We filmed from January to end of May. Of course, making TV is always difficult but there’s no reason on God’s Earth why doing what we do shouldn’t be fun. In some ways it’s been a relatively simple process in that I wrote all the episodes but, and I’m trying to find a non-clichéd way of saying creative relationship, there isn’t one. It’s been very relaxed and fruitful,” he added in a recent interview with Deadline.

There’s also word that Cross and Idris Elba are planning to return for a fifth season of the popular and acclaimed drama, Luther which is planned for sometime in 2018, along with Hard Sun.
