With reports that Neil Marshall’s Hellboy reboot is set to begin filming in the fall (i.e. now), we expected our first look at some of the characters to be revealed before anything got spoiled from on set photos. That moment is here, as our first look at both the film and the titular hero is here.
The first image of David Harbour as Hellboy has been released on Twitter and is actually pretty badass. At first glance, it’s safe to say he looks like Hellboy, though as Twitter noted, it could still be Perlman under the makeup. The overall look of the character is pretty similar to the original film series, though as that was fairly accurate we weren’t expecting too much of a difference. It does look like his iconic weapon – the Samaritan – looks different than the previous versions we’ve seen, though we’ll have to wait for a better look to be certain.

Harbour tweeted out another image of his Hellboy – complete with his iconic trench – which has since been taken down, but it provided a better idea of the different look we’ll be seeing in the reboot.
It was shared with a line from The Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” which seemed fairly apt. The makeup looks great, and the Hand of Doom – which we previously saw in the construction phase on Harbour’s Instagram – looks very impressive as well. We’re hopeful that we might see a few other characters now that this first look is out, such as Milla Jovovich’s Nimue, Ian McShane’s Professor Broom, Sasha Lane’s Alice Monaghan, or even the recently cast Daniel Dae Kim in the controversial role of Major Ben Daimio.
What do you think of these first few looks at the new Hellboy? Are you excited to see what David Harbour can bring to the role or are you still upset Perlman won’t be returning? Let us know in the comments section below and join us at the GEEKexchange Discussion Group!
