John Wick Chapter 2

Dynamite Entertainment and Lionsgate have partnered up for a new comic book series inspired by Keanu Reeves’ 2014 film, John Wick.

Dynamite’s CEO and publisher, Nick Barrucci, said that the comic will focus on entirely new stories. The comic will also introduce new assassins and characters that Wick interacts with, but Barrucci didn’t say if the character would be leaving New York City. In the upcoming sequel, Wick leaves the country and heads to Rome where he meets another group of assassins.

The comics will not be strict adaptations so much as an expansion of the John Wick universe. It’s unclear if the John Wick comic will take place before or after the events of next year’s sequel, but the press release sent out by Dynamite and Lionsgate promises original stories. Further details on release dates and creative teams for Dyanmite’s John Wick comics are still forthcoming, but for now, artist Giovanni Valletta has done some concept art sketches of the character in action. Check that out below:

John Wick

“John Wick was such an exciting film, mixing martial arts action with snappy dialogue and smart writing,” Dynamite CEO Nick Barrucci said in a statement. “As the credits rolled, you were left wanting more, and it was obvious they had the makings of a franchise. We were quick to pursue the opportunity to develop a comic book series, and are thrilled to have been granted the rights to tell all-new stories with the character!”

So if you’re craving even more of the Assassin who’s back, we’ll be getting a comic adaptation in addition to John Wick: Chapter 2which will be hitting theaters in February, 2017. It’s an appropriate property to adapt to comic form given John Wick‘s stylish, almost mythic world building. Since we’ll be getting a John Wick: Chapter 3, the comics could be a great continuation of Keanu’s adventures through the beautifully chaotic crime world.
