Disney’s recent string of live action remakes have been garnering mostly positive reviews. With The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Aladdin also on the way, news broke that the live action Mulan movie has found its star. Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, will be starring in Niki Caro’s upcoming remake. During the casting process, Disney was adamant about casting a Chinese actress in the lead role, and Liu Yifei seems like the perfect choice, having already starred in a number of popular Chinese movies and crossover hits.
The actress starred for 40 episodes in a show called The Return of the Condor Heroes. The show, which aired in 2006, led to her being cast in 2008’s The Forbidden Kingdom, starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li. More recently, Liu Yifei has starred in Ip Man 3 and The Four, with plans to co-star in Peter Segal’s upcoming film Inversion with Samuel L. Jackson.
As far as Mulan goes, there’s still no news about whether or not the film will be a musical, but Liu Yifei has a background in action, adventure, and martial arts movies that make her perfect for the role. With Niki Caro directing, the film was written by Jurassic World and Avatar 2 writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver who wrote the current draft of the script, which they reworked from a draft by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin. Other than Liu Yifei, we don’t know who’s going to star in the film – or much else about it, for that matter – but we do know that the studio is aiming for a 2019 release, meaning they’ll probably be releasing more information soon.
