Marvel Legacy is just getting started with the latest shakeup to the Marvel line, which promises to return a number of classic characters to fans. They started this off with a big way in the final moments of Marvel Legacy #1, which teased the return of Logan. The original Logan has been missing since 2014’s The Death of Wolverine event saw him encased in an adamantium statue, without his healing factor. Old Man Logan, his son Jimmy from the Ultimate universe, and Laura/X-23 have since continued on in his stead, but Marvel clearly has plans to return the fan-favorite mutant to the Marvel Universe.
How this is being done is a bit of a mystery which is set to play out in a number of Marvel series over the next few months, as announced by Marvel last week. Starting in January, a series of after-credit scenes will be featured in specific series that Marvel claims are “all connected” and will unlock small pieces and clues of Wolverine’s return, much like the MCU’s post-credit scenes have teased future films.
His return to the Marvel Universe was just the beginning, and the Infinity Stone he holds could change everything. Now, the questions begin: Why was he searching for the Infinity Stone? How did he escape his adamantium prison? Where is Wolverine, and what is he hiding?
The answers will begin to unravel in 2018, but fans will catch glimpses of their favorite mutant in special after-credit scenes at the end of key Marvel titles. Appearing in select issues starting in January, some of Marvel’s most acclaimed artists will tease the whereabouts of the adamantium-clawed mutant with tantalizing teaser panels – and it’s all connected!
“Fans have been speculating about Wolverine’s whereabouts since he first reappeared in MARVEL LEGACY #1—and the Marvel Universe is left just as unaware!” teased SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. “So keep your eyes peeled as Canada’s favorite citizen makes his presence felt in titles all across the Marvel line! It’s all leading to something—but what?”
“Mystery has always been part of Wolverine’s DNA,” added senior editor Mark Paniccia. “He’s one of Marvel’s most interesting and popular characters. Fans are going to have a helluva ride finding out where he’s been and how he came back.”
Track Wolverine as he jumps around the Marvel Universe, starting with the following titles:
- CAPTAIN AMERICA #697 – On Sale 1/3/18
- MIGHTY THOR #703 – On Sale 1/17/18
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #794 – On Sale 1/24/17
This slow reveal of Logan’s return is presumably coinciding with the Countdown to Infinity teaser we saw last week. That teaser featured the Logan we saw at the end of Marvel Legacy #1, wielding the Space Stone along with Star-Lord and Captain Marvel, who each wielded the Power and Reality Stones, respectively. How the Infinity Stones play into Logan’s resurrection is unknown, but we’ll soon learn all the details as the mystery of Wolverine’s return is explored this year.
We’ve already mentioned a few of the heroes who have stepped up to take the ‘ol Canucklehead’s place following his death in 2014, but we left an important character out of the list. That character is Weapon H, the Hulk/Wolverine hybrid we last saw in the “Weapon of Mutant Destruction” crossover between Totally Awesome Hulk and Weapon X. Marvel hasn’t forgotten about Weapon H either, who will be getting his own series this March:
The Weapon X program has done it, at the cost of their own destruction: they’ve completed their biggest and most dangerous experiment yet, a hybrid of Hulk and Wolverine DNA known as WEAPON H. Now, he’s ready to take on the world – and he means business.
Following his debut in TOTALLY AWESOME HULK and WEAPON X’S “Weapon of Mutant Destruction” summer crossover, Marvel is excited to announce that the character will star in a new ongoing series coming in March from Totally Awesome Hulk/Weapon X writer Greg Pak and X-Men: Blue artist Cory Smith.
“Greg Pak wrote one of the biggest and most action-packed Hulk stories ever in Planet Hulk…so it only made sense that he brought those same sensibilities to Weapon H,” said series editor Darren Shan. “We’re going to pit him against the biggest threats of the Marvel Universe that you can imagine, starting with a new kind of Wendigo! And then Cory Smith is going to multiply that times ten and smash the hell out of it with his incredible art! Whether you read his first appearance in Weapon X: The Hunt for Weapon H or not, you’re going to find that we only scratched the surface of this bombastic new character!”
Where is Wolverine?begins in January, with Weapon H dropping onto comic shelves in March.
