Michael Pena and Diego Luna are set to star in the fourth season of the Netflix series, Narcos which will also shift the Colombia-set series to Mexico. The two actors are set to be series regulars and are just another ongoing change-up on the drug-cartel drama.
Netflix’s Narcos has undergone considerable shake-ups within its cast list, with the former lead Boyd Holbrook leaving the show after the second season and Game Of Thrones favorite Pedro Pascal remaining as DEA agent Javier Peña. Even its original star, Warner Moura left the series at the end of Season 2 after the doomed fate of the Colombian drug lord he was playing, the infamous Pablo Escobar.
Netflix released a teaser video for the upcoming fourth season, and to announce the addition of its two new stars. You can check that out below:
The video doesn’t offer any footage from the series itself but instead, an unknown group of people playing guitar as their recently-inducted stars’ names flash on the screen. The announcement video also features a new version of the show’s theme song. It’s unclear at this time whether Luna and Peña will be playing two lead DEA agents like Holbrook and Pascal did in the first two seasons, or whether one of them will emerge as a new crime lord following season 3’s Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela, the leader of the Cali cartel.
Both Peña and Luna have already had impressive careers with Peña recently starring in the Marvel film Ant-Man and in its upcoming sequel, in addition to appearing in the Ridley Scott-directed film The Martian. He is also set to appear in the highly-anticipated film adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, due out in March. Luna recently starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and started out in the critically-acclaimed Mexican film Y Tu Mama Tambien, alongside Gael Garcia Bernal for Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron.
Peña and Luna also previously worked together in the 2014 film Cesar Chavez as the civil rights leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers Union. It was Diego Luna’s English language directorial debut.
In Season 3, which featured a largely new cast, the bloody hunt for Pablo Escobar had ended, and the DEA and agent Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) turned their attention to the powerful Cali Cartel and its four Kings: cartel leader Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela (Damián Alcázar); Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela (Francisco Denis), the brains behind the rise of the of Cali Cartel and Gilberto’s brother; Pacho Herrera (Alberto Ammann), the on-the-low hitman who runs the Mexican connection and international distribution; and Chepe Santacruz Londono (Pepe Rapazote), who runs the satellite NYC empire of the Colombian drug network.
Season 4 of Narcos will be set in Mexico and production recently began on the new season in Mexico City. The new season is slated to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2018.
