30 years ago Neil Gaiman launched one of the most influential comic book series of all time. DC’s Sandman followed Dream, the personification of dreams, as he tangled with gods, monsters, and humans while exploring the nature of stories and his own self. Running for 8 years, Sandman redefined what comic books could be for the era, andn has been a lasting work of art almost unparalleled. Now, Gaiman is returning to the world of Dream once again.

Launching in August with a one-off issue titled The Sandman Universe No. 1, plotted by Gaiman, the four titles will take place in a shared universe utilizing characters and concepts originated by the writer including The Dreaming, Tim Hunter and the Books of Magic, as well as the Los Angeles-based retired devil himself, Lucifer. The one-shot will bring new creators to Sandman, including writers Nalo Hopkinson, Kat Howard, Si Spurrier, and Dan Watters who will all contribute to the four-issues to follow, before each of the new authors takes off on their own spin-off series. Bilquis Evely will draw the Sandman Universe No. 1 one-shot, which features cover art from Jae Lee.

Sandman

“The Sandman Universe has always been very close and personal to me and I am thrilled to open up the world once again to an extremely talented group of writers and artists,” said Gaiman in a statement. “I get to see the joy in these brilliant people whom I’ve selected, as they get their chance to play in this world…I started feeling guilty. I liked the idea of getting the toys played with again, reminding people how much fun this is, and also getting the opportunity to work with some fantastic writers. Down the line, there will be fantastic artists as well.”

Following the Sandman Universe one-shot, the line will begin in earnest in September with the first issues of The Dreaming and House Of Whispers, with the debuts of Lucifer and Books Of Magic the following month.

DC released a promotional video, below, to accompany the announcement.

Si Spurrier will take readers back to The Dreaming. The new series will once again be set in the Sandman’s kingdom, and feature the return of fan-favorite supporting characters like Mervyn Pumpkinhead, Lucien the Librarian and Matthew the Raven as they attempt to keep things running in the absence of their ruler, Dream.

House Of Whispers will be written by Nalo Hopkinson and feature cover art by Yanick Paquette. Handpicked by Gaiman who commented on his choice for the writer as being essential when utilizing Erzulie: “if we’re gonna do House of Whispers, if we’re going to do Erzulie and have all this voodoo lore stuff, then I want Nalo to do it because there isn’t anybody better.” The series’ will explore the mystery of the titelar house’s appearance alongside the House Of Mystery and House Of Secrets.

Books Of Magic will follow in the months behind Whispers and Dreaming and feature the new adventures of Tim Hunter as scripted by Kat Howard. “She has the touch, she understands the magic,” Gamain promises.

Finally, when it comes to Lucifer, Dan Watters is up to the task, says Gaiman. Penning the next chapter in the life of comic book readers’ favorite fallen angel (perhaps he is now TV viewers favorite as well). Gaiman commented that “Dan is smart and deep, and he gets it,” Gaiman said. “He’s up to the challenge of ‘Okay, can you recreate this thing?’”
