Amazon’s upcoming Jack Ryan series is shaping up to be one of the better new shows of 2018. After I caught the first seven minutes at this year’s New York Comic Con, I was even more excited to see what star John Krasinski would do with the character after Chris Pine, Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, and Ben Affleck. The show’s first season focuses on Ryan’s early years with the CIA, and the new teaser – titled “First One” – is sure to emphasize that.
The 30-second trailer mostly consists of a conversation between Ryan and one of his subjects. The two are talking calmly, and Ryan admits that he’s kind of new to this whole “spying” thing, leading him to ask the question: “How am I doing?” I don’t know if I just can’t separate John Krasinski’s face from The Office, but there’s something very Jim-like about his performance in this clip. Regardless, I like the direction this show is taking, using its first season as a kind of Jack Ryan origin story.
Fans of the original novels will probably be pleased how the character is portrayed. The film adaptations that we’ve seen never really stayed true to Tom Clancy’s novels, which favored intelligence and pragmatism over big action set pieces. None of the marketing for this new show has been particularly action-centric, with more of a focus on what Jack Ryan does to communicate with his suspects.
According to a synopsis of the show:
When CIA analyst Jack Ryan stumbles upon a suspicious series of bank transfers his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the US and her allies.
Amazon’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be released on the streaming service in 2018.
