Carrie Fisher’s recent passing has been the catalyst for thousands of poetic internet posts and creative memorials, and among them is a Change.org petition to give Princess Leia, the roll Fisher is best known for, her own official coronation as a Disney Princess.
“I started the petition because it was something that bugged me since Disney bought the property. Disney had princesses and Leia was a Princess. Then I found out that Disney had set rules for who could and couldn’t be a princess. (Supercarlin brothers video) With Carrie’s death, I think that it’s time to change the rules.”
Cody Christensen, who started the petition, has good reason to want to see Leia made an official part of the Disney Princess line,
“I actually have 5 daughters and there are constantly princess movies playing in the background.” he said “We are big fans of the current Princess line-up, but I think that Leia is a really strong, positive, awesome role model for my girls, and she would make a great addition.”
The Disney Princess line of toys and merchandise kicked off their brand with the official coronation of Princess Tiana (The Princess and The Frog) back in 2009, and since then each new princess has been welcomed to the group with a coronation celebration in front of Cinderella’s castle at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The petition asks that Leia be made the first live-action Disney princess, and be given her own official coronation ceremony. As a Pixar princess, Merida (Brave) was the first non-Disney princess welcomed into the group.
The recent Princesses added to the line-up have been stronger role models than the pre-conceived idea of what a Disney Princess can be, and adding Leia to the group only furthers that evolution to include truly powerful women.
If anything could get Disney to change their rules, it’s a rebellion, and so far nearly 17,000 voices of the 25k target, have cried out that they want to see an official Princess Leia coronation. The petition will be sent to Disney CEO Bob Iger once the target is hit.
Fans of Leia, and the Princesses, have already been welcoming the rebel princess in their own way with fan videos and fan art for a few years now, and we hope that she continues to inspire the next generation to stand strong.
