If you are unfamiliar with Painkiller Jane, you’ve so far missed out on a series that has touched a number of different mediums over the years. Created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada, Painkiller Jane tells the story of Jane Vasko, a cop who discovers new regenerative powers after a near-death experience.
The latest news concerning Painkiller Jane is that a new movie is in the works, with Jessica Chastain set to star in and produce. Chastain is certainly a hot property right now, having starred in recent hits like The Martian, Interstellar, and Zero Dark Thirty, so her participation with Painkiller Jane is great news for the character.
Deadline reports on the announcement that “Lotus Entertainment’s Lenny Beckerman will produce along with Solipsist Films’ Stephen L’Heureux (Sin City: A Dame To Kill For) and Chastain through her Freckle Films banner. Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, Ara Keshishian and Palmiotti will exec produce.”
The character of Jane Vasko first appeared in a five-issue miniseries for Event Comics back in 1995, and most recently the new Painkiller Jane series released from Dynamite Entertainment. This new series has fans enjoying the character with new levels of popularity again, and news of the new movie is just increasing that. Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Jane in a live action series.
The first time we saw a slightly different version of the character debut in a made-for-TV movie starring Emmanuelle Vaugier as Jane Browning, which aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. The movie did well enough to later warrant a TV series, though the series practically rebooted the events of the TV movie to better fit the format. This time Kristanna Loken played the titular character, who was named Jane Vasco in an attempt to bring the character once again closer to the source material. The TV series lasted for one season, and was fairly well-received by fans.
We are pretty excited to see another more faithful adaptation of the character to finally hit the big screen, and will bring you more in the next few weeks as Painkiller Jane continues to come together.
