In the spirit of shared universes and the further monopolization of nostalgia, the folks behind The CW’s Riverdale – a new drama about Archie and his gang of pals in a decidedly grim reimagining of the original stories – are already hinting at an expansion of Riverdale‘s cast of characters, which includes Josie and The Pussycats, as well as fan-favorite Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Some of you might remember Sabrina as being the cutest sorcerer on TV for most of the 90s, but what you might not know is that she’s actually a part of the original Archie universe.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show’s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has said:

“Some people don’t even know that Sabrina is in the Archie family. There is absolutely a universe where Sabrina pops up in Riverdale or one town over in Greendale. Certainly, the priority is launching Riverdale and making sure that show is as good as it can be and as embraced as we want it to be. I’ll just tease that Sabrina has potential with a capital P.”

If live-action-murder-mystery-crossover-Archie-adaptation isn’t enough to get you excited, then be gone.

The CW has spent a lot of time creating their own insulated collection of universes, including the four-series crossover of Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. If a few months ago you would have told me that the Archie universe was just around the corner…I would have promptly believed you because if 2016 has taught us anything it’s that there is literally no limit to the insanity that human beings can create when they believe in something.

That said, Riverdale premieres on The CW – Thursday, January 26th. Then, after each week’s episode, check back on GEEK for a recap/review of that week’s episode. You can also see my reviews of the FX shows It’s Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaTaboo, and Legion in the coming days and weeks right here on GEEK!
