Efron shared a photo of himself as serial killer Ted Bundy in the upcoming indie film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile via his Twitter. The film is based on the Nicholl Fellowship-winning Black List script by Michael Werwie and is being directed by Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster‘s Joe Berlinger.

The film is told through the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer, Bundy’s longtime girlfriend (played in the film by Lily Collins), who went years denying the accusations against Bundy but ultimately turned him into the police. Only nearing his execution, when Bundy began talking about his extensive and heinous murders, did Kloepfer, and the rest of the world, learn the true scope of his numerous and grizzly crimes. John Malkovich will play Judge Edward Coward, the man who presided over Bundy’s televised trial and sentenced him to death in 1979.

Efron posted the image of himself as Bundy taking a mug shot alongside the caption: “Meet Ted. #BehindTheScenes”

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile heads in front of cameras this week as production gets underway but already this is a curiosity of a film. So repugnant is its source material one worries if the film will veer into exploitation, and yet there is a societal fascination with serial killers. In Bundy’s case, it was often cited that his good looks helped him lure poor victims to their terrible fate (hence the hiring of a Hollywood star like Zac Efron). Coupled with a fake cast or sling, Bundy would lure women who resembled his ex-fiancee to his 1968 Volkswagen Beetle; kidnapping them and taking them to a remote area where he would murder them.

Considering Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile will take the perspective of Bundy’s girlfriend, Kloepfer, it might end up being an interesting subversive take on the serial killer movie. Regardless, Efron certainly looks the part. They even captured the eyebrows.

Collins posted a photo of herself in full costume as Elizabeth Kloepfer with the caption “Meet Liz”:
