Valiant has been teasing the return of one of their “most popular and oft-demanded characters” since the Valiant Summer Event of 2017. Shadowman, who was first created by Jim Shooter, Steve Englehart, and Mike Manley way back in 1992, has a storied history with Valiant, and as a legacy character has also had a few different characters carry the name Shadowman.
Valiant announced today that the newest iteration of the Jack Boniface character will be brought to us by superstar comic creator Andy Diggle along with acclaimed artist Stephen Segovia, who will launch a new SHADOWMAN ongoing series on March 28th, 2018. The press release details why this date was chosen, as well as what the dynamic creators will be bringing to the hit character:
Notably, this is the same release date that propelled X-O MANOWAR #1 to the top spot as the 2017’s best-selling independent new series launch. That is no mistake…because, without a doubt, this series is primed be the Valiant’s biggest ongoing launch of the New Year.
And with with good reason: Much like his Jeff Lemire on Bloodshot or Matt Kindt on X-O Manowar, Diggle has built a two-year “roadmap” for Shadowman’s future in the Valiant Universe – one that redefines Jack Boniface’s persona, unearth several central revelations about the character’s mythology, and reassert Shadowman’s place as a major presence at the forefront of the Valiant publishing line.
Like Kindt’s run on X-O MANOWAR, the series will also be comprised of three-issue arcs by rotating cast of Valiant’s most high-profile talents. The first, entitled “Fear of the Dark” (with art by Segovia), will see Jack Boniface – older, wiser, and more powerful than we’ve seen him before – return to New Orleans after an extended and mysterious absence in the Deadside that will have serious ramifications on what we know about the character and his relationship to the broader Valiant Universe.
The first issue – on sale March 28th, 2018 – will feature covers by Eisner Award nominee Tonci Zonjic (Who is Jake Ellis?), Renato Guedes (Bloodshot Salvation), Raul Allen (Secret Weapons), Juan Jose Ryp (Britannia) and Travel Foreman (Animal Man)…plus Valiant’s first-ever, high-end glow-in-the-dark variant cover recasting Tonci Zonjic’s cover art in luminescent ink. (Spooky!)

In the epic tradition of X-O MANOWAR and BLOODSHOT REBORN, a staggering new beginning for Valiant’s supernatural icon starts here on March 28th with PART ONE of “FEAR OF THE DARK” – a tense and gripping three-issue introduction pushing Jack Boniface to the farthest edge of fear itself…and into a startling, adrenaline-fueled fight for survival as Shadowman takes command of the birthright he was born to uphold!
“It’s a story about stepping out of the shadows and embracing the light. Trying to move on from your own mistakes and be a better man. Of course, it’s not easy,” said writer Andy Diggle. “As Shadowman, Jack will never fully be able to escape his own demons. It’s about learning to live with them. And as he comes to a better understanding of himself and his family’s legacy, he’ll discover whole new worlds and new powers he never even imagined he had.”
Don’t fear your demons… Fight them! Orphaned at birth and raised on the margins of society, Jack Boniface never knew his place in the world. Until he discovered it waiting for him…in a darkness far older than the reign of men…
Unbeknownst to him, Jack was fated to become the next in a long lineage of Shadowmen – mortals bound to violent voodoo spirits of immense power – that could safeguard our world against incursions from realms beyond. For years, he struggled to control the loa’s murderous urges – a battle he eventually lost.
But now, after years of self-imposed exile, the man once known as Shadowman is returning home to sharpen the weapon within…and unleash a reckoning on the evils of our world that will soon send shockwaves through heaven and hell alike…
SHADOWMAN #1 will hit comic store shelves on March 28, 2018.
