Screen Gems is lining up a feature film based around the Slender Man mythos. The studio is responsible for such other genre films as The Mothman Prophecies, Boogeyman, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Hostel, Pride and Prejudice And Zombies, as well as the Resident Evil and Underworld movie franchises.
Slender Man looks to also be lining up a youthful cast of up-and-comers for what will probably become a franchise of its own, provided the grosses are adequate. You can check out a very early teaser poster for the upcoming horror thriller below:
Written by David Birke and Mike Scannell, the Slender Man film centers on a tall, thin horrifying figure with preternaturally long arms and a featureless face. He is thought to be responsible for the haunting, stalking, and disappearance of countless victims.
First conceived by Eric Knudsen as part of an online horror competition, the Slender Man mythology made headlines in 2014 when two 12-year-old girls from Wisconsin were charged with attempted murder for stabbing another girl in order to impress Slender Man. The two girls originally claimed he was real. HBO made a documentary about the mythology and the controversy called Beware The Slenderman.
It’s unknown what the official synopsis of the movie is but the internet figure’s own myth serves as good a launching point as any for a horror movie.
Slender Man will be directed by Sylvain White, who has worked on episodes of The Americans, Sleepy Hollow, The Originals, and the feature film The Losers (starring Neegan, Gamora, and Captain America). The horror thriller will star the likes of Joey King (the talented, young actress from The Conjuring and forthcoming Wish Upon), The Affair‘s Julia Goldani-Telles, Captain Fantastic‘s Annalise Basso, When The Bough Breaks‘ Jaz Sinclain, Talitha Bateman of the upcoming Annabelle: Creation, and relative newcomer, Alex Fitzalan.
Look for Slender Man to hit theaters May 18, 2018.
