Passengers

Just a few weeks removed from the release of the official poster, Sony has finally released the first trailer to their upcoming film Passengers. The trailer looks beautiful, but remains relatively ambiguous as it doesn’t reveal much about the film that we didn’t already know. Specifically, that Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence’s characters are on a spaceship that’s on a 120-year voyage and that they both emerge from their hibernation pods 90 years too soon. Take a look for yourself below.

It starts off pretty innocently and initially feels like a love story set in space. That said, there’s definitely going to be some harrowing moments the two will have to face as the ship appears to be hurtling towards a star. While the trailer gives us a nice little taste of these elements, it does a good job of not revealing too much. The deeper points of the plot still seem well shrouded in mystery. This is exemplified by the last line spoken by Pratt in the trailer, “There’s a reason we woke up early.”

We also get our first look at Andy Garcia and Laurence Fishburne in the trailer. It’s unclear how big their roles are considering that the premise is that only Lawrence and Pratt emerge from their pods early. Additionally, we see them in the moment preceding that last line by Pratt possibly implying that the two might be that reason that they woke up 90 years too soon.

Lastly, in spite of rumors of a troubled production, the trailer looks gorgeous. The ships interiors look sleek and appropriately futuristic. The action that we see in the trailer look kind of interesting but not wholly new to the genre. That is to say that spacewalking and trying not to get sucked out an open airlock or hull breach are not new ideas. The ships design itself is strange but it seems functional in the sense that the outer arms are rotating around the core to create artificial gravity.

All in all the trailer shows some promise, but it’s not knock your socks off great. In a crowded December, there’s no way of knowing how well the movie might do when it hits theaters on December 21. Not only will Passengers have to compete with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which releases the week before, it will also have to compete with Assassin’s Creed which also hits theaters the same day.

So what did you guys think of the trailer? Do you think that with Lawrence and Pratt at the forefront will push Passengers to success? Or do you think it could be a bust? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

The kind of Geek that has several shelves on my book case dedicated to Star Wars novels. Star Wars is essentially a way of life for me. Other things are cool too. Generally a big fan/critic of movies, I try to go to the theater once a week. There's a lot of great TV out there too, chances are if I can, I'll write about the stuff I love. I dig the Marvel and D.C. universes so far...except Suicide Squad...that was a disappointment. I love a lot of music but I gravitate to alternative and punk. The Libertines are my absolute favorite. Michigan born and raised and I root for my home teams; Tigers, Lions, Red Wings, Pistons and Spartans.
