Criminally under-watched, The Expanse is one of the best shows on TV, and if you’re not already watching, you have a little catching up to do. Currently in its 2nd season, Syfy recently revealed that the science fiction space epic would be returning with a 3rd season next year. Deadline is reporting that the season will be 13 episodes in length, the same as the current season.
In the announcement, the President of Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment Chris McCumber said,
“The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television. We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”
The Expanse is based on the series of novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pseudonym James S.A. Corey, and tells a sweeping tale set 200 years in the future where Earth, Mars and The Belt are on the brink of war. So far 6 novels have been published in the series with plans for 3 more, and the show has just entered the events of the second book Caliban’s War. The two have also written a few of this seasons episodes, something well outside of the norm in the TV industry.
With so much material left to adapt, it’s not a complete shocker that The Expanse was renewed, however, like all shows ratings ultimately decide a series’ fate. While ratings haven’t been stellar, the show is still one Syfy’s top shows ,with only The Magicians and Z Nation pulling in more viewers on average.
The Expanse stars Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Frankie Adams and airs on Syfy at 10pm. Be sure to check out our ongoing coverage of The Expanse including our weekly reviews.
