X-Men

Hype has been building for Fox’s upcoming foray into horror with The New Mutants, the long-awaited X-Men spinoff directed by Josh Boone. The first trailer briefly introduced us to a few characters while also showing off a few horror elements, which left some fans jumping for joy and others scratching their heads. The lack of a costume or superhero theme seems to have divided a few fans, though personally, I can’t wait to see how The New Mutants tackles the horror with its rumored take on the Demon Bear Saga.

The official Twitter account has dropped a few creepy teasers that give us small glimpses into the origins of our main characters.

This first teaser is a clear reference to Rahne Sinclair AKA Wolfsbane, played by Game of Thrones‘ Maisie Williams. Rahne is a deeply religious Scottish youth whose faith is questioned by her mutation into a wolf-like creature, which she equates as demonic. Her upbringing by an abusive Reverend Craig – played by Happy Anderson (who recently played Jerry Brudos on Netflix’s Mindhunter) – factored heavily into Rahne’s distrust of her own mutation, and will surely play a large part in her character for the film.

The second teaser features a dead canary (used during mining to detect harmful gas leaks) and a flash of light, which teases Sam Guthrie AKA Cannonball (played by Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton). These teasers are likely glimpses at the first appearance of these various mutant powers, as Cannonball’s first developed when he saved his father and fellow miners from a cave-in, which is probably responsible for Guthrie’s busted arm in the trailer.

The only other tweet on the official account features the first released trailer, which you can check out again here.

We can expect a few more origin teasers to drop for the other mutants in the film, which include Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin AKA Magik, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar AKA Mirage, and Henry Zaga as Roberta DaCosta AKA Sunspot, and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

The New Mutants hits theaters on April 13th, 2018. In the meantime, you can check out The Nerd Server crew discuss the upcoming film on the latest episode of the Every Town Has An Elm Street podcast.
