While most of our attention was focused on the MCU solo debut of Tom Holland’s Spidey in Spider-Man: Homecoming, there’s a small part of our spidey fandom focused on Sony’s upcoming Venom from Ruben Fleischer, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom.
Following the initial casting announcement we haven’t heard too much specifically about Venom, just discussions about where Sony’s Spider-Man universe fits in with Marvel Studios’ larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (the short answer is not really at all) and possible plot points for Silver and Black, Sony’s other announced project that will see Silver Sable and Black Cat team up in Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s adaptation (for lack of a better term). While Silver and Black is certainly an interesting idea to expand the Spidey universe, there’s no doubt that Venom is the real draw here, so this first bit of casting news has us pretty excited.

Reports are coming in that Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Night Of) is in talks to join the cast of Venom in an unspecified role. All that has been revealed is that the role is that of a popular Marvel Comics character, leading to a lot of fan speculation online. We do know that Cletus Kasady AKA Carnage – basically the serial killer version of Venom – will appear in the film as the main villain, so that seems like the obvious character for Ahmed to play, considering we don’t have confirmation yet of any other Marvel characters in the film.
Of course, looking to the comics there are a number of other characters Ahmed could be portraying. If this is set up as an origin story it’s possible we could see reporter Eddie Brock tracking down the killer known as the Sin-Eater, a big part of the reason why Eddie Brock came to hate Spider-Man and became a perfect host for the Venom symbiote. We could also be seeing other potential hosts appear in the film, with rumors that Brock’s Ex-wife Ann Weying – the short-lived She-Venom – might be appearing in the film. Is former Venom host Angelo Fortunato considered popular enough to be the Marvel character Ahmed is rumored for? Probably not.
So we’ll have to wait for further confirmation on whether Ahmed has joined the cast, and which popular Marvel Character he might be portraying. As always, keep it locked to GEEK for more on this story as it develops.
