Dark Matter

Syfy’s much-underrated space serial Dark Matter is now just weeks away, rather than months. Six weeks to be exact, as Friday, June 9 has been announced as the date for the third season premiere. This year will begin with back-to-back episodes starting at 8 pm, and then moving to regular single episodes on Friday nights at 9 pm for the remainder of the season.

For those of you who haven’t seen the show, it’s based on the graphic novel by the same name, created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. The series tells the story of six people who awaken on a spaceship with no memories of who they are or how they got there. What starts out as a crew of amnesiac strangers, grows into a family that learns to lean on one another.

In classic science fiction fashion, this crew hits all the bases for a balanced cast of characters;

  1. The Nice Guy
  2. The Leader
  3. The Comical Hardass
  4. The Quiet Badass
  5. The Tech Geek
  6. The Moral Compass

And the are joined by my personal favorite character -the Android. So these seven, aboard the deck of the spaceship Raza, make up our primary cast – but it’s their evolution as characters that make this show something special. Over the course of the first two seasons some of these generic character types have changed or traded spots, and often times it’s Marcus Boone (aka 3 – our comical hardass) who ends up being the heart and soul of the group, something that wasn’t exactly telegraphed early on.

For those of fuzzy memories, or those interested in watching without going back to the beginning, here’s a quick catchup on what you need to know going into season three.

And this is as close as they’ve given us to a season three trailer…

We’ll keep you up to date as news breaks, we’re expecting a new trailer any day.
