Ah, it's back to school time once again young ones. This new generation of kids will be so busy with smartphones, hashtags, Vine video filming and Call of Duty that they won't have time to even do their homework.
This author was born in 1988 and made his way through life as a wide-eyed, curious youngster in the ’90s. My generation was distracted by Sega and Nintendo, expensive trading cards games (damn you, Pokemon cards!), action figures with disposable thumbs and pro wrestling. But one of the most nostalgic good times us ’90s kids experienced were all the awesome cartoons that came on after school and Saturday mornings. Life sure was easy once our favorite cartoon’s intro lit up our TV screen.
As an ode to those wonderful animated shows of the ’90s, I took the time to reminisce about the good ‘ol days. After about 2 hours of careful deliberation (watching tons of videos on YouTube), I came up with 40 of the best cartoon intro theme songs. These tunes take me and plenty of others back to a time when cartoons were just plain awesome. Remember, these cartoons had to be shows that started in the ’90s to be considered for this list.
This is just Part 1, so make sure you stay tuned for the Best ’90s Cartoon Theme Songs Part 2!
40. The Terrible Thunder Lizards
Dinosaur…MERCENARIES? Yep, they existed in cartoon form.
39. Samurai Pizza Cats
Japan took some cats, outfitted them in samurai armor and made them deliver pizza. Three great things equal one awesome show.
38. Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog
Some folks preferred DIC entertainment’s version of Sonic’s animated series. This one was way funnier and charming.
37. Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series
There sure were a lot of duck-based cartoon during the ’90s. There was even this dope action cartoon based around a hockey team.
36. Mighty Max
Max and his portal hopping buddies all made us wanna wear that hat with the M on it.
35. Mummies Alive!
The definition of weird yet endearing is a cartoon about mummies who knew kung-fu.
34. Road Rovers
Another case of animals saving the world from certain evil. And this time, those animals were loyal canines in battle suits.
33. Superman: The Animated Series
The epic orchestral score for these superhero cartoons smelled the amazing mood us ’90s kids were put in. Exhibit A – Superman.
32. Sam & Max
A dog and his loyal bunny made for the best freelance police officers. They ARE the law.
31. Timon & Pumbaa
The Lion King’s two most memorable characters got their own cartoon. Thank the Disney gods that their theme song came along for the ride.
30. Goof Troop
Goofy is always the man, so this show featuring the rest of his troop made for good TV.
“COME TO TAZ-MANIA! COME TO TAZ-MANIA!” We’re still trying to fly there (someday…).
Once the tribal singing comes in, we start moving our butts around like Baloo in an EDM club.
The shy kid who was in love with a girl who had a last name called “Mayonnaise” was the kid of the ’90s.
26. Sailor Moon
The Sailor Scouts fended off evil 24/7. They also made boys embarrassed to admit that they loved this show.
This surprisingly dark Disney cartoon was one of the best ’90s supernatural soap operas. It was that serious.
24. Iron Man
Tony Stark fended off evil dudes with pimp rings every chance he got. ‘Nuff respect to Iron Man.
23. Disney’s Recess
Yes kids – recess was this serious. All the shenanigans you could think of went down in this underrated Disney show.
22. Hey Arnold!
The neighborhood kid with the football head was king back in the day.
21. Captain Planet and The Planeteers
The planet needed a hero. This green haired badass was it. The outro song is still awesome sauce.
