Jeff Lemire, of Sweet Tooth and Essex County fame, will stretch his creative muscle even further with his next project, a limited series entitled Trillium.
Officially announced today at the New York Comic-Con, Trillium is a romantic science fiction story set in two very different time periods. The two main characters- a botanist in 3797 studying odd plant life in the far reaches of colonized space and an explorer in 1921 investigating a lost Incan temple– somehow cross paths and fall in love. Their affair somehow brings about the end of the universe as we know it. So, I guess Romeo & Juliet didn’t have it so bad, did they?
“I think fans of my previous work will see traces of both Sweet Tooth and The Underwater Welder in its chemistry, but I really do want to push myself in new directions as well,” Lemire said of the project. “…it’s a story about the dawn of human exploration and its natural conclusion thousands of years away. But most of all it’s a love story. And I can’t wait to share it with you.”
As per the usual with his creator-owned projects, Lemire will handle both the writing and illustrating duties. The series will be published by Vertigo in 2013.
