After a few weeks of teasers the All-New Marvel NOW wave of new series have been revealed!
When Marvel NOW! first launched a year ago, it promised a new direction for the Marvel Universe that featured new creative teams and a ton of brand new first issues, complete with a unique new cover design that planned to stray from the classic comic covers. We were delivered new architects for our favorite stories as Jonathan Hickman presented his take on the Avengers while Brian Michael Bendis took over the X-Men, both teams now involved in their own crossover events to wrap up the first year of stories.
In December, All-New Marvel NOW! will launch an impressive new wave of titles that expands on the success of the first year while offering some interesting solo titles that will add to the Marvel NOW Universe. We previously discussed All-New Invaders and Inhumanity, which feature a modern day version of the WWII team, and the rise of the Inhuman population following the events of Infinity, respectively. What follows is the recently announced titles that rocked the New York Comic Con this year.
X-Factor returns in 2014, with a brand new direction, a new artist, and—best of all—the same writer! Peter David launches ALL-NEW X-FACTOR early next year with the amazing talents of Carmine Di Giandomenico on art.
Anyone paying close attention at the end of the previous run will have picked up clues about where this new title kicks off. Polaris has been headhunted by the mysterious Serval Industries to lead a corporate-funded super team. Joining her for this adventure will be her half-brother and former teammate Quicksilver, plus a new face to the X-Factor family, the charming thief Gambit, as well as a few members we can’t reveal just yet.
It’s been too long since a team of New Warriors has flourished in the Marvel Universe, and far too long since familiar faces have operated under that banner. Now, in the hands of writer Christopher Yost and artist Marcus To, NEW WARRIORS makes a 2014 comeback, complete with Justice, Speedball, and even Nova—well, a Nova.
Joining Vance, Robbie and Nova newbie Sam Alexander will be a cast of characters representing every corner of the Marvel Universe, from Atlantis to Attilan. That includes Hummingbird, a divinely-powered character Yost introduced in the pages of SCARLET SPIDER—not to mention Kaine himself—and a new take on old school Timely hero Sun Girl, who will debut in a forthcoming arc of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM-UP.
Some like their revenge served up cold.
For the mortal hosts of vengeance itself, the road warriors known as the Ghost Riders, revenge arrives in a simmering spree. Asphalt turns to jelly, and the wicked crumple in the exhaust. When Mr. Hyde descends on LA with a vile new drug, an all-new Ghost Rider revs up to win back the streets.
This March, the Spirit of Vengeance spurs on a new avatar, and young gearhead Robbie Reyes has more than choppers on his wish list. Strap in for a faster, louder ride than ever before as ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER #1 screams onto the blacktop.
A new SILVER SURFER ongoing series blasts off toward unexplored corners of the Marvel Universe with an All-New Marvel NOW! launch coming next March. Writer Dan Slott and artist Mike Allred serve as the powerhouse team co-piloting this brand-new look at the cosmos.
“It’s fun, it’s full of adventure, and it wears its love of the Marvel Universe on its sleeve,” Slott shares of his SILVER SURFER plans. “This book very much knows what it is.”
The Surfer himself will have a new perspective of the Marvel Universe, thanks to a new character named Dawn Greenwood.
Colonel James Rhodes once defended the globe as the armored War Machine. The moniker suited the marine’s devastating impact in a firefight, but not always his moral code.
In an all new series launching in March by writer Ales Kot and artist Garry Brown, Rhodey assumes the role of America’s stalwart caretaker, IRON PATRIOT. Tarnished by its original torchbearer, the callous Norman Osborn, the StarkTech armor and its title finally adorns a man of selfless ideals.
The new handle comes part and parcel with a freshly focused mission statement and a commitment to defending America from terrors domestic and otherworldly. Family and country will be ever paramount, but can Iron Patriot hope to safeguard either?
In January, Nick Spencer teams up with co-writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Stefano Caselli for AVENGERS WORLD, part of the All-New Marvel NOW! initiative. As a sister series to AVENGERS, WORLD serves to “advance the stories and themes of the main title,” while focusing greater attention on some of the new heroes recently added to the team’s roster.
“The premise of the book is that it’s the Avengers, doing big things, because it’s an Avengers World now,” editor Tom Brevoort explains. “But while we’ll field the same potential lineup of 18+ Avengers in WORLD, we’ll specifically be looking to give greater screen time to some of the newer Avengers, like Hyperion, Smasher, Cannonball, Shang-Chi, Starbrand and Sunspot.”
Thrust into the kill-or-be-killed environment of Murder World, only a handful of young heroes escape the confines of AVENGERS ARENA. Those hardened survivors find themselves behind enemy lines, infiltrating the Masters of Evil organization in AVENGERS UNDERCOVER.
Can kids like Hazmat, Bloodstone, Death Locket, Cammi and Anachronism hope to maintain their humanity in this clandestine operation? Does convincing their sinister new comrades that they’ve embraced their role as villains mean that they can never go back?
Murder World prepared them for death, but can they cope with living as Masters of Evil? The descent begins in March 2014 with AVENGERS UNDERCOVER #1 by Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker.
Writer Nathan Edmondson and artist Phil Noto give Natasha Romanova the 2014 she deserves with the launch of a new BLACK WIDOW series. The creators intend to explore the peaks and valleys of the super hero spy’s complicated life with their own distinct storytelling style.
“Overall this is a super hero spy thriller,” Edmonston explains. “Natasha’s past is dark, her intentions are noble, and her villains are ruthless. Beyond that, though, what’s so exciting about this series is the tone will shift issue to issue depending upon her mission or adventure, depending on her location and the challenge. On the whole, though, this book is in Natasha’s head, and that’s a place full of twists and turns and shadows, as we quickly discover. We are so freakin’ proud of this book, and it’s got a bit of everything, and plenty you won’t expect.”
This February, She-Hulk makes her All-New Marvel NOW! debut in a bombastic new series from the creative team of Charles Soule and Javier Pulido!
Jennifer Walters is an Avenger, member of the FF, savior of the world on more than one occasion, and has a pile of degrees. Not to mention being seven-feet tall with a right hook strong enough to take out the Thing. But even her big brains and bigger brawn might not be enough for to tackle her full case load and kicking some bad-guy butt.
Announced this weekend at New York Comic Con, Marvel announced that as part of their All-New Marvel NOW! rollout of series, “Mighty Avengers” wrier Al Ewing and artist Lee Garbett will team for “Loki: Agent of Asgard.” The new series will not only bring the green-and-gold god to a more adult age, it’ll also cast him in an espionage-tinged tale where he undertakes missions for the Norse world’s All-Mother in an attempt to redeem himself…or not.
Elektra Natchios may be one of the deadliest assassins in the Marvel Universe, but she’s still a human being. And while murder may be her art and profession, the act still weighs heavily on Elektra’s soul. One of the way’s she’s dealt with this has been by killing for what she believes are noble and good causes; helping out organizations like S.H.I.E.L.D. and heroes like Wolverine, Daredevil, and her allies on the latest incarnation of the Thunderbolts.
Does killing, even if for virtuous reasons, ever really even the scale? Does Elektra view herself as a hero or something much worse? And how does she handle her desire to atone and be something better? Writer Zeb Wells and artist Mike Del Mundo seek to answer those questions this March when they kick off a new ongoing ”Elektra” series as part of All-New Marvel NOW!
Frank Castle has done what the Avengers refused to do, hunting the lowest criminal to the ground, eschewing due process for swift death. Now the vigilante moves on from his New York haunts, poised to punish the wicked in a new jurisdiction.
In February, Frank ushers his signature brand of black and white justice to sun-soaked Los Angeles, only to discover he’s hardly operating at the top of the food chain. Who comprises the 1-3-1, and why have they taken on a target as volatile as Frank Castle?
The hunter becomes the hunted in PUNISHER #1 by Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads.
Carol Danvers still has plenty of holes to punch in the sky.
During her first year operating under the rank of Captain Marvel, the seasoned veteran and mainstay Avenger fought off a who’s who of her own worst enemies and the relentless hordes of INFINITY. While she managed to save herself, her friends, and the entire world on a number of occasions, those victories did not come without a sacrifice: Captain Marvel’s own sense of identity and memory fell victim to her victories.
Kelly Sue DeConnick’s steady hand guided Carol through her previous adventures, and the writer revealed to us that she still has plenty of stories left to tell starring the character. Artist David Lopez joins her on a new ongoing CAPTAIN MARVEL, which launches in March 2014.
Jessica Drew thought she had finished with secrets and lies, but March 2014 sees an end to that reverie.
As the newest recruit to Maria Hill’s team in SECRET AVENGERS, Spider-Woman joins Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Phil Coulson and more for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most dangerous field assignments.
Can the team withstand the arrival of former enemies turned reluctant allies? Can lies save lives? Writer Ales Kot and artist Michael Walsh declassify an all-new chapter of covert intrigue, free-falling satellites and spilt martinis when SECRET AVENGERS kicks off once more with a new issue #1.
It was the series that changed comics forever. With the utterance of one word, Michael Moran transformed from the ordinary into the extraordinary – and Miracleman was born!
Long out of print, Marvel Comics is pleased to announce that the earth-shattering stories that injected new levels of sophistication into the super hero genre will finally see the light of day once again! Starting this January, Marvel will begin publishing the legendary run of Miracleman by the original creators that began in Warrior Magazine and continued under now defunct publisher Eclipse Comics!
Fans lucky enough to have read these trailblazing stories when they were originally produced have often referred to this legendary run on Miracleman as “the lost Watchmen,” and Marvel is proud to finally bring these incredible comics to an audience that has clamored for them.
Making these stories available to an entirely new generation is one thing, but following the original groundbreaking run, the epic more than 30 years in the making will reach it’s cataclysmic conclusion! You heard correctly – Marvel will also be publishing all-new Miracleman stories from legendary creators Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham! Long left unfinished, Gaiman and Buckingham’s famous storyline will ultimately see the light of day!
A lot of exciting new series announced, along with the continuing storylines of Marvel NOW’s first wave, but that all seems partially eclipsed by the news that not only is Miracleman finally getting a Marvel reprint, but the storyline will also be concluded by some of the original creators.
A huge showing form Marvel at NYCC 2013, one which we will be talking about a lot more here at GEEK over the next few months.
