Details are starting to surface on J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. As of yesterday, we have a plot description to go along with the first four moving images Abrams showed off on Conan last month.
“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness,” reads the synopsis. “When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”
Sounds pretty intense. We still don’t know if Benedict Cumberbatch is playing Khan; however, the “one man weapon of mass destruction” descriptor is definitely fitting of the character. The synopsis mentioning an internal threat and a set photo surfacing of Cumberbatch wearing what appears to be a Starfleet shirt hints that he’ll be someone else, though. If he is indeed Khan, he’ll likely be a ret-Khan. Most seem to think that he’ll be Gary Mitchell, Captain Kirk’s former friend gone bad from the original series episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” These feelings increased after Karl “Bones” Urban dropped Mitchell’s name back in July. We can trust him, right?
The villain du jour will likely remain unknown until we see the first 9-minutes of the film with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey IMAX on December 14. Until then, you’re encouraged to speculate freely in the comments.
