Right now there are plenty of MMO’s to choose from ranging from fantasy, science fiction and even horror.
However, there are some pen and paper games that would make an excellent introduction into the MMO market. Here are some great suggestions for some new MMO properties and some of the similar games that are out there right now.
Set in a twisted radioactive wasteland you could play as a mutant, a pure strain human or even a mutated animal. You would set out into ruined cities, lush jungles and endless deserts. As you make your way through these environments you would have mutations to aid you in battle along with artifacts that you find in these ruins.
SIMILAR TO: Fallen Earth: This is set in a wasteland and there are mutated creatures and such, but you can only play as a human.
In the future the right of way goes to them who have the biggest guns. This is the world of Car Wars, where you would be able to not only create your character but your car as well. Select from a wide array of vehicles, weapons, armor, and gadgets and explore, duel, and take on missions from city to city.
SIMILAR TO: Darkwind War on Wheels: This is a free to play online turn-based game with mass amounts of vehicular combat. You can manage your gangs and battle against people from all over the world.
Set in the 1920s, you take on the role of an investigator battling against unknown horrors. One of the features of this game would have to be a sanity meter, since as you battle these creatures you would slowly go insane. It would be set in iconic locations like the city of Innsmouth and of course Miskatonic University.
SIMILAR TO: The Secret World: Set in present day and with no level system, you play as one of three secret societies. You will go against some enemies that resemble the old gods as well as twisted and misshapen humanoids.
Imagine a world where you could take on the role of an adventurer, archaeologist or mercenary. Flying all over the world you would be able to take on Nazi’s, inhuman creatures, and maybe even aliens! Some of the places that you would be able to explore would be deep in the congo, pyramids, or even underwater cities!
SIMILAR TO: Lost Continents: This game was being developed by VR1 and it would have been awesome. It not only featured instances that would have been accessible by one group but also atomic mummies and bionic chimps! The game unfortunately never saw the light of day, so we can only hope for something similar in the future
Set in the year 2020 in a world where people are now artificially enhanced. Cybernetics are prevalent as hired killers (known as solos) clash against nomads. Big guns, gleaming chrome, and a virtual world for hackers would make this game fun to play.
SIMILAR TO: Shadowrun Online: Using the same engine as Shadowrun Returns, this online game will take place in a world where magic and technology are fused together. You can play as an elf decker or a troll street samurai as you fight using tech, bullets, and magic.
Playing in the world of his majesty’s secret service, you would become an agent under James Bond. You would be flown all over the world on a variety of secret missions as you gain access to various high tech gadgets.
SIMILAR TO: The Agency: This would have been an excellent game, as you would have worked for The Agency (a secret division who quells global threats). The project was cancelled by Sony but it might be resurrected in the future.
All Flesh Must Be Eaten
The worst has happened and the recently deceased have started to come back to life. The undead horde roam the streets for fresh meat, which is unfortunately you and your friends. Gear up as you scavenge for guns and food to stay alive, but use your supplies wisely.
SIMILAR TO: Dead Frontier: This online MMO is a top down shooter where you can go into an abandoned city, but don’t venture too far as you will be chased down and eaten by zombies.
Set in the aftermath of World War III, your characters were overseas in Europe when everything went to hell. Now the United States as you once knew it is plunged into chaos and ruin. Will you be able to bring this great country back from the brink or is it gone forever?
While there are more than a few online shooters there are sadly none with this concept. A Red Dawn type of world would make an excellent online MMO.
One of the first and if not the best sci-fi RPG, this one had a few unique concepts. For example, when you created a character you had a chance to be drafted into service. As you created and rolled you would get various skills and you could also muster out. With a rich setting and deep character creation this would make an excellent MMO.
SIMILAR TO: EVE Online: This is one of the most flexible MMO’s out there as you can choose to be a trader or a pirate. There are people who also make a living at this game and buy giant ships to conquer the galaxy.
These are just some of the many ideas and pen and paper games that are out there today. What are some of the games you would love transformed into an MMO? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
