The villain for season two of Penny Dreadful was planted right before our eyes in the guise of medium Madame Kali, played by Helen McCrory.
This news was announced by Showtime president David Nevins during the network’s TCA announcements for next year’s slate. “Season one’s antagonist was sort of an inhuman character. It’ll be good to have a more human antagonist”, he elaborated on the choice to change up the cosmology of the show.
Most are familiar with McCrory through her performance as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise before her turn in Penny Dreadful. McCrory’s Madame Kali was introduced in the episode “Seance”, as the medium who hosts a fun commune with the dead that takes a frightful turn when Vanessa Ives’ tendencies to get possessed get triggered. There may have even been some possession envy on Kali’s part when Ives becomes the channel in which through all sorts of entities come out and play.
Eva Green’s performance in this episode gave audiences their first preview of the lead’s shatteringly intense capabilities to deliver one of the most horrifying possession performances in recent horror. This episode also solidified the show as the genre piece to keep an eye on.
While Madame Kali only made a few brief appearances for the rest of the series, McCrory’s signature devious charm warned that next season’s big bad is up to no good. She even makes an appearance in the end of the first season when she catches up with Dalton’s Sir Malcolm, flirtatiously teasing that they’ll be seeing more of each other.
With many of the show’s character’s rooted in horror literature mythology it begs the question: who might Kali actually be? Or is she an original character?
