Since its cliff hanger ending in 1998, Phantasm Oblivion Phantasm 5: Ravager Movie Trailer Surprisingly Arrives Online seemed to be the ending of a franchise, which had always tried to bring something new to its fans as well as expand on its fascinating mythos.

So you can imagine everyone’s surprise when out of the blue, the new trailer for part 5 in the series appeared on the Internet. Not only was it a trailer for the movie, it was a confirmation that Don Coscarelli still had faith in the franchise that he started way back in 1979.

Though his filmography has always been on the short side, his movies always seem to receive a cult status from his fans. Not only the Phantasm series, but movies like The Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep and John Dies at the End have all become fan favorites during the years.

But it is with the Phantasm series that fans remember him the most. According to the site Upcoming Horror Movies, Newline Pictures were once ready to develop their own version of Phantasm 5 with a certain Bruce Campbell popping up in a key role. Their version focused on a post apocalypse future where The Tall Man runs an American state with an army of zombie dwarves at his disposal, but is still trying to break into our world for good. Due to budgetary costs it fell through, but luckily Phantasm fans have not lost out.

Below is the Phantasm 5 trailer that has made everybody once again fear The Tall Man.

This is a welcome return of all the favourite elements you expect from the franchise. The haunting Phantasm theme automatically takes you back to the early 1980s when The Tall Man was making his name known. Angus Scrimm looks even more terrifying the older he gets, and looks great in the few shots we see (it seems even a rocket launcher cannot keep The Tall Man down). The balls have returned and apparently increased in size with a huge ball floating before Reggie Bannister, who has also returned to fight the good fight. In fact it is rumoured that all the key players have returned for this movie including The Tall Man’s female alter ego, The Lady in Lavender. Not only that but we have the return of the white room, the alien planet and the shrunken zombie henchmen. New inclusions to the series seem to be people with lots of guns, something which never goes amiss.

Little else is known about the movie but little bits of information have come to light.

  • It has been filmed already and work started in 2008.
  • Parts of the movie were filmed in Reggie Bannister’s own house in California
  • Don Coscarellis is only involved in a supervisor role. He has left the directing duties to horror artist David Hartman.

The fact that Don is not in a directing role may worry some people about how faithful the series will be without him in the driving seat. But Don himself had this to say about the films future director:

“I felt it was time to let someone else play with my train set. David and I go back to my film Bubba Ho-Tep. He did terrific visual effects on that, and more recently created a wild animated sequence and some amazing visual effects in my most recent film, John Dies at the End. Our aesthetics are in sync and he’s quite an experienced director in his own way”

Director David Hartman also had this to add about the movie:

“This film is a real turning point in the series. There’s real closure for the core characters that I hope fans will respond to. We were fortunate to shoot amazing new sequences with horror icon Angus Scrimm – he has terrific scenes with Reggie and Mike that are truly powerful”

So it seems that the franchise is in good hands and with Don still helping out it may be a refreshing change to see what someone else can do with this series. With the director and the whole cast behind it, it seems that Phantasm 5: Ravager will be in the same style as the movies before it. No information on release dates but Geek will be keeping our eye on this movie when it is eventually released hopefully sometime this year.
