Dan Slott has been charting the course for Spider-Man for the last few years, and has brought us huge changes over his run which have elevated Peter Parker to one of the premiere heroes in the Marvel Universe, complete with multiple costumes, his own company with Parker Industries, and new villains to match his new status as a world-hopping hero. Of course, there has been no shortage of problems with some of Spidey’s classic foes, with Doctor Octopus also elevating his villainy during Slott’s run, even taking over the body of Peter Parker to become the Superior Spider-Man, another part of Slott’s continuing legacy with the character. This epic moment in Doc Ock’s history seemed to bump him up to the coveted role of Spidey’s arch-enemy, a role previously held by Norman Osborn AKA Green Goblin.
Following the close of the “Goblin Nation” storyline that ended Otto’s time as the Superior Spider-Man, Osborn – having previously undergone plastic surgery to change his appearance – had lost his Goblin powers and his insanity. He had then begun creating weapons and building up his Goblin Army in war-torn areas for dictators and despots, though he was once again defeated by Spider-Man and his allies. This caused Osborn to vow to regain his insanity, as he concluded that was the only time he was actually able to beat Spider-Man, who has also vowed to bring down Osborn once and for all.
That brings us to the latest, and perhaps final, confrontation between these two age-old enemies, with Dan Slott’s upcoming “Go Down Swinging” storyline. The actual preview for the upcoming storyline focuses more on the Green Goblin persona than Norman Osborn, so we have to wonder how that will play into the storyline following recent events with Osborn.
“The last time we saw the Green Goblin was in ‘Goblin Nation’ at the culmination of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN” says Spider-Editor Nick Lowe. “You’d almost think that was the biggest Green Goblin story Dan Slott had in him. You’d be wrong. And make sure you watch to the end of the trailer!”
The trailer he mentioned was released to hype the upcoming battle between Spidey and the Green Goblin by looking back at their history, but it also teases the appearance of a brand new character, which you can check out below:
So who, or what, is the Red Goblin? Has Osborn stooped to demonic levels to get his powers back? Is there a new face behind the mask of the Green Goblin? We’ll have to wait until “No More Swinging” kicks off in March.
