Marvel Powers United VR Expands Its Roster on Oculus

Marvel Powers United VR was announced almost a year ago at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim. Since then, however, very little has been revealed.

Only a few character announcements were made public, and after going ‘missing in action’ at the biggest game show in the world – E3 2018 – this past June, we started to wonder if the game had run into some sort of trouble or perhaps might be expanding beyond the Oculus. With a confirmed release date, new characters and an upcoming tease for San Diego Comic-Con all happening  in the past week, the game is confirmed alive and well.

Marvel Powers United VR will release for Oculus Rift on July 26 for $39.99 and can be pre-ordered now. In addition to the release date, the following new heroes were announced: Black Panther, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. With the announcement of the heroes, Sanzaru Games followed this up with another announcement of two villains that would serve as bosses: Venom and Ultron.

If those announcements weren’t enough, they also confirmed two levels players will be able to experience: Wakanda (home of Black Panther) and Sakaar Arena (where Thor and Hulk fought in Thor: Ragnarok).

As we expect more characters news to arrive in the coming weeks, below is a list of everyone confirmed thus far:

Heroes

  • Black Panther
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Deadpool
  • Captain Marvel
  • Hulk
  • Crystal
  • Black Bolt
  • Thor
  • Hawkeye
  • Black Widow
  • 8 Characters still locked

Villans

  • Ronan the Accuser
  • Loki
  • Venom
  • Ultron
  • 8 Characters still locked

It would seem Marvel is getting serious about games. “We only want to work with partners who want to hit a grand slam … partners who have the passion and the commitment and the love for the characters” said Bill Rosemann, executive creative director for Marvel Games.

With VR in a state of flux, Marvel Games and Sanzaru Games have a unique opportunity to make this game the tipping point for comic-book fans who were on the fence about the medium. At any rate, it’s hard to not be excited about scratching an enemy with Vibranium claws in VR so we’re remaining cautiously optimistic.

We still don’t have any announcements on major characters like Captain America or Spider-Man yet, but San Diego Comic-Con is almost here – and as was the case last year, Marvel is going all in having committed to having a Games Panel in Hall H on July 19th from 1 PM to 2 PM PST. As many of these panels are streamed these days, we will update you on where to watch as soon as we know. With the game so close to launching, we’re anticipating some big announcements.
