Star Wars Episode VIII

Disney CEO Bob Iger showed new footage from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the highly anticipated next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to shareholders at the company’s annual meeting yesterday. This is the first real look at the next installment, and we have compiled the most information we could as to what was shown at that conference.

Reporter for the Los Angeles Times, Daniel Miller, tweeted out some descriptions of the footage which features Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) asking Rey (Daisy Ridley), “Who are you?” before the prospective padawan “deftly” handles a lightsaber. Other characters shown in the footage include Chewbacca, Leia, and Finn, and there were also several shots of new locations with a variety of landscapes and climates, as well as “an X-Wing wobbling mid-air, under attack inside a giant ship.” The footage, again, confirms that The Last Jedi picks up from the very second of The Force Awakens, a first in the franchise’s history.

You can check out all of Miller’s tweets below to get a full idea of what was shown during the Disney conference.

The video has not yet been made available, and is likely not to be released publicly, but could contain a lot of footage that will make up the film’s first official trailer.

The question of “who are you?” has been peppered throughout Disney’s early marketing for the film. From Rian Johnson’s story teases to the recently shown footage, “who are you?” is shaping up to be the focus of much of The Last Jedi. Considering the end of The Force Awakens, Rey is herself a person looking for answers; answers to who she is, her place in the universe but also where does she land on the Jedi spectrum? We’re crossing our fingers that all these questions are answered and more are raised come December, 2017.

Rian Johnson directs the film, which includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens cast members Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New stars include Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens around the world in theaters and IMAX on December 15, 2017.
