A new gameplay trailer released this week revealed that Dragon Age: Inquisition will launch on October 7th, 2014.
With The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt delayed until 2015, Bioware has little to no competition in the fantasy RPG market this year, but even without that, Dragon Age: Inquisition would have been one of the year’s biggest titles. The Dragon Age series is critically acclaimed and widely popular, and BioWare has shown repeatedly, in Dragon Age as well as their enormous Mass Effect series, that they know how to handle large-scale depth in an RPG trilogy.
In the final instalment of the franchise, BioWare says they’ve expanded on the concepts that made Dragon Age a success, doubling down on story, choice and strategic gameplay.
One of Dragon Age: Inquisition’s biggest refinements in terms of choice and story progression is an overhaul to the romance system: Rather than follow a series of telling prompts and offering a gift to the person you’d like to seduce, Dragon Age: Inquisition is designed to have romantic interests, and simple friendships, develop more organically in the game world. Via Game Informer:
“Previously, we had a lot of the follower content gated by your approval rating. Whereas what we’re doing now, we’re having a lot more of your content event-driven,” Gaider says. “The approval you’re at informs the nature of the conversation.”
That means you shouldn’t have to agree on everything to befriend or romance another character. “They’re like, ‘Yes, you’ve chosen a thing that I disagree with, but we’re good friends,’” Laidlaw says. “So that’s going to change the color and tone of [those interactions], so [they're] more nuanced. I think that’s going to take them beyond what’s been done in the past.”
Core gameplay has been modified as well in order to make combat both strategic and intimate. Fighting dragons is now an entirely different experience than in previous games and should make encounters with dragons far more unique and exciting. For the strategy angle, BioWare has brought back the tactical view from Dragon Age: Origins.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is set to become a big finale to the series, and with an October 7th release date, Inquisition is now sandwiched inside a very crowded release window that includes Alien: Isolation and Batman: Arkham Knight.
Dragon Age: Inquisition will launch on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One and PS4.
