Legendary Pictures has just announced that Duncan Jones' upcoming film, Warcraft, will be released on December 18th, 2015.
The summer season is known for its big science fiction blockbusters, while the winter months seem to be the time for major fantasy releases. Where Duncan Jones has previously been known for smaller, character-driven science fiction films such as Moon and Source Code, his next, an adaptation of World of Warcraft, will likely be a much bigger affair. It is the latest major blockbuster to be announced for 2015.
Already announced? The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Batman vs. Superman, Star Wars: Episode VII, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, The Fantastic Four and ID Forever Part I, to name a couple. It’s a crowded field, to be sure, but given Jones’ stellar track record so far, we’re pretty interested to see what he does with a major budget backing him up.
As of now, not much is known about the film adaptation of the wildly popular MMO. Actually, beyond the director and writer, Charles Leavitt, there’s not much set in stone as of yet. Paula Patton and Colin Farrell were offered lead roles, but no official announcement has been made as to whether or not either actor has signed a deal.
Also rumored to be on the studio’s “short list”? Quite a few people including Paul Danno, Anson Mount, Travis Fimmel, and Anton Yelchin. A fine group of actors that one might easily see as an Orc, Tauren, or even Gnome.
While a release date might seem innocuous information, it likely signals that we should be getting more info on the project in the coming months. For now it is nice to know that things are progressing on the project after the shakeup between Legendary and Warner Bros over the summer months.
Who do you hope to see in Warcraft? Have a favorite character you’d love to see make it into the film? A certain actor in mind?
