Sailor Moon fans have plenty of reasons to get excited about this summer's reboot of the anime classic.
The first Sailor Moon manga hit the shelves in Japan back in 1992, and despite its age, the story of Usagi Tsukino has endured and found new life in new generations of fans. Rumors of a 20th anniversary reboot circulated for quite some time, and fans can finally circle the premiere date on their calendars: July 5, 2014, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal will debut worldwide on the Nico Nico website. The new series will run for 26 episodes with a new episode streaming every other week. There has been no official confirmation yet on any translations, but rumors suggest that the series is likely to run in Japanese only, with subtitles.
The incredibly talented and prolific Kotono Mitsuishi will be revisiting her role as Sailor Moon (Usagi Tskukino) in the reboot. She has lent her voice to hundreds of well-known anime productions (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Excel Saga, and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED to name just a few) and fans have every reason to be excited about her return for the reboot. She will be joined by a cast of seasoned voice actors, including Hisako Kanemoto (Squid Girl) as Sailor Mercury, Rina Satou (A Certain Scientific Railgun) as Sailor Mars, Ami Koshimizu (Kill La Kill) as Sailor Jupiter, and Shizuka Itou (Hayate the Combat Butler) as Sailor Venus.
If there’s one thing that the Sailor Moon franchise has always had is excellent merchandising, and it looks like Sailor Moon Crystal will be no exception. Bandai is presently accepting preorders for the Sailor Moon crescent wand, which looks a lot like the version sold in the United States back in the 1990s, though the new version reportedly includes vocal clips as well as sound effects. Japanese street fashion company Spinns will have a line of Sailor Moon inspired clothing. Other rumored items include a new artbook, disguise pen, new plushies and UFO prizes.
