Scenes from Stan Lee’s Comikaze [image gallery]

This past weekend, the Los Angeles Convention Center played host once again to the biggest and fastest growing pop culture convention of its type, Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo! With guests ranging from the ever-beguiling Elvira, Mistress of the Dark to Kevin Smith to Todd McFarlane to the Walking Dead's Norman Reedus (Daryl). Whether they were a hardcore gamer, cosplayer, or comic fan or just a family wanting to see what all the fuss was about, the event had something for everyone. The demand for a geeky LA convention was certainly high. We asked Regina Carpinelli, the CEO and co-founder of Comikaze if she had an idea of just how many people walked through the doors this year.

We don’t have final numbers yet, but attendance increased significantly over last year (we had about 30,000 total attendees last year). Exhibitors were thrilled, the fans and celebrities had a great time, the panels were all standing-room-only. Next year will be even better!!! Stay tuned…

The relatively low cost of entry ($20 a day, with savings for a weekend package) brought tens of thousands of people from all over Los Angeles and beyond, with lines wrapping around the building in 100+ degree heat for longer than some would have liked. Sure, there were a few hiccups here and there (expected for a young show like this), but for those folks who didn’t want to wait in the long line to get in, Comikaze gave them the opportunity to use their Saturday passes on Sunday as well. And while Sunday was busy, it didn’t have a hint of the lines Saturday had. As the demand grows and the staff and the programming expands, Comikaze will certainly be a force to be reckoned with in the comic and pop culture convention scene for years to come.

Inside, fans had the opportunity to meet their favorite movie and tv actors, take part in a Quidditch match, face down an apocalyptic zombie obstacle course, and get original artwork from some of the most talented creators in comics and beyond. Some lucky fans even went home with original copies of X-Men #1 and Incredible Hulk #181 (first appearance of Wolverine) signed by Stan the Man himself!

As you can tell by the images below, we got to see a lot of amazing things on the floor of the main hall. We’re eager to see what Stan and Regina have up their sleeves next year. They’ll return to the LA Convention Center and add a day to their schedule, November 1-3, 2013.
